Faculty Kudos

image Dr. Seema Lalani, professor of molecular and human genetics, and Dr. Brendan Lee, chair, professor and Robert and Janice McNair Endowed Chair of molecular and human genetics, are principal investigators of a new NIH award to increase access to evaluation and genomic testing for rare genetic diseases in medically underserved children living along the Texas-Mexico border. They will receive more than $600,000 over two years to implement a web-based model of delivery of care and transform the current clinical practice to improve care for children with rare disorders.

Dr. Bindi Naik-Mathuria, associate professor of surgery and pediatrics, has been appointed to Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy as an L.E. and Virginia Simmons Senior Fellow to develop a new section, Firearm Injury Prevention and Safety. This enhances the expansion of a collaboration between the Baker Institute and Baylor. Faculty interested in joining or collaborating with this section are welcome to send inquiries to re18@rice.edu.

Evenings with Genetics: How are physicians and scientists including underrepresented groups in the promise of precision medicine? Baylor will host a panel of experts to discuss this topic and the intersection of identity and genetics at an upcoming Evenings with Genetics virtual seminar at 7 p.m. Feb. 15. The webinar, titled “Race and Genetics: Perspectives on Precision Medicine,” will discuss the complexity of racial identity and its impact on health and disease.

Thank a Resident Day: Send a thank you note to a resident for Thank a Resident Day on Feb. 25. Feel free to give shout-outs to specific programs or specific instances where residents and fellows have gone above and beyond. These comments will be posted on the BCM InTouch for all to view. Texas Life Science Forum: Dr. Chester Koh, professor of urology, will take part in the Pediatric Device Innovation panel at the annual Texas Life Science Forum at 1 p.m. Feb. 24 at Rice University. Koh is director of the Pediatric Robotic Surgery Program and director of the Southwest National Pediatric Device Innovation Consortium.

Norton Rose Fulbright Workshop: The Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will host a Norton Rose Fulbright portfolio preparation workshop from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 18. Women of Excellence Awards: Nominations are open for the Women of Excellence Awards, which recognize members of the Baylor community who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to issues that affect women. The awards are open to faculty, staff, trainees and students and will be presented by the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at a virtual ceremony during Women’s History Month in March. Nomination deadline is 5 p.m. Feb. 25.

Associate Course Director Hematology/Oncology: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an associate course director for the MS2 Hematology/Oncology course. The course is scheduled in Term 1, typically occurring in August. The course is approximately four weeks in length with 35 didactic sessions and five hematology clinical group learning sessions. Associate Course Director for MS2 Cardiology: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an associate course director for the MS2 Cardiology course. The course is scheduled in Term 1, typically occurring in August. The course is approximately four weeks in length with 29 didactic sessions and eight cardiology case-based group learning sessions. Associate Course Director for FBSM: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an Associate Course Director for Foundations Basic to the Science of Medicine course. The course is in Terms 1 and 2, August through mid-December. The course is approximately 19 weeks in length with approximately 17 hours of scheduled learning time a week. The course goal is to increase the student’s knowledge of basic biomedical sciences and ability to integrate and apply these foundational sciences to the practice of medicine. Curriculum Committee At-Large Faculty Member: The School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for At-Large members from current faculty members. These faculty members will join the chair, vice-chair, past-chair, and subcommittee chairs as part of 18 faculty members of the Curriculum Committee. We are seeking candidates from a broad representation of the faculty and encourage people from all disciplines to consider applying. Curriculum Committee meetings are held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. on every first and third Monday. The committee has the responsibility for the overall design, management and evaluation of a coherent and coordinated curriculum. Terms last three years, and each faculty member will serve on at least one subcommittee. Learn more about nomination criteria and application process.
