Wear Red 2022

Caption: Baylor College of Medicine will participate in National Wear Red Day Feb. 4, in support of the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign, a nationwide movement to fight heart disease in women. Be sure to take a photo of you and your colleagues (masks on for group photos) wearing red and send it to Anna Kiappes by 1:30 p.m. Feb. 4, to be featured on Baylor's social media channels.

Faculty Kudos

Dr. Kenneth Mattox, distinguished service professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery, and his wife, June, will be recognized as Wayland Baptist University's 2021 Distinguished Alumni Benefactor Award winners during a Feb. 18 banquet held as part of the school's homecoming. Mattox has written more than 15 books, 600 scientific articles and more than 1,000 abstracts, and has a cardiac surgical procedure named after him: "Mattox Manuever."

Dr. Kirti Saxena, associate professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was one of 45 scientists worldwide to receive funding from the Baszucki Brain Research Fund and the Milken Institute's Center for Strategic Philanthropy to advance research for bipolar disorder. Her project focuses on using a behavioral health avatar for nonverbal behavior analysis to personalize treatment for the disorder.

This Week

Lunar New Year: Join the Lunar New Year Celebration 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 4 in E-Hallway by the Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Everyone is invited. There will be a red envelope giveaway and opportunities to win Baylor merchandise by sharing your Lunar New Year moments to the Kudoboard. Feb. 1 began the Year of the Tiger; the tiger symbolizes strength, exorcising evils and braveness. Lunar New Year is celebrated in East and Southeast Asian countries and other regions. It is typically celebrated for 15 days for feasts and leisure activities with family members, as well as a time to honor deities and ancestors. Pathways to Promotion: The Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development will offer virtual workshops in February, starting with "Pathways to Promotion" from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 7. Please RSVP to Debbie Fernandez at faced@bcm.edu or by calling 713-798-7285.

Blood drive: The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 8 in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Those who donate will receive a free T-shirt. Reserve your spot by signing up online. If you have COVID-19 or a positive test for COVID-19, you must wait 10 days and be asymptomatic prior to donating. American Red Cross reports blood and platelet donations are critically needed to help prevent delays in vital medical treatments. There has been a 10% overall blood donation decline since March 2020.

TEDx: The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy is hosting TEDxBaylorCollegeofMedicine, the college's first TEDx event, on Feb. 8. The virtual seminar will feature nine speakers from Baylor and the Houston community and will be livestreamed from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Find more information about the event, the speakers and how to register here.

TCH-BCM Joint Book Club: The Medical Humanities group at Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy will host a virtual book club event at 3 p.m. Feb. 8 featuring "The Collected Schizophrenias" by Esmé Wang. Join hosts Dr. Kriti Puri and Dr. Andrew Childress to discuss the book. A limited number of books are available for free by emailing medicalhumanities@texaschildrens.org. Faculty Opportunities

Datathon 2022: Project proposals for the second annual Datathon will be accepted Jan. 17- Feb. 14. The scope of this year's event has been expanded to data related to patient care at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center and Baylor Medicine, as well as education data. Proposals for new projects must encompass one of four focus areas: quality improvement, population health, research projects or education projects. Submit a one-page proposal to datathon@bcm.edu. Associate Course Director Hematology/Oncology: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an associate course director for the MS2 Hematology/Oncology course. The course is scheduled in Term 1, typically occurring during the month of August. The course is approximately four weeks in length with 35 didactic sessions and five hematology clinical group learning sessions. Associate Course Director for FBSM: The Dean of the School of Medicine is soliciting nominations for an Associate Course Director for Foundations Basic to the Science of Medicine course. The course is in Terms 1 and 2, August through mid-December. The course is approximately 19 weeks in length with approximately 17 hours of scheduled learning time a week. The course goal is to increase the student's knowledge of basic biomedical sciences and ability to integrate and apply these foundational sciences to the practice of medicine.
