Coronavirus & Flu Information

Flu shots on campus plus don't forget to attest!

More on-campus flu shots are being offered by the Occupational Health Program. Check the new mobile app or online app for dates and times and to reserve your slot so that physical distancing can be followed. Check back for more dates to be added. You may also get your flu shot at your local pharmacy, clinic or your own healthcare provider, but wherever you get it, you must attest using the app by Nov. 30. Additional resources are available at the OHP website, Flu Central and by emailing flu_vaccine@bcm.edu.

Campus access update

The main Baylor campus is now open to faculty, staff, students and trainees with an authorized colored badge 24 hours a day. The Cullen and Garage 6 entrances will be locked at 9:50 p.m. on weekdays and 6:50 p.m. on weekends, but personnel and trainees will be permitted after-hours access by using the intercom at Cullen and then scanning their badge (if required) and completing COVID-19 screening.


Awards and Recognitions

Boniuk to receive 'Human Spirit' award

Dr. Milton BoniukDr. Milton Boniuk, professor of ophthalmology and pathology, will be honored by the Holocaust Museum Houston with the 2020 Guardian of the Human Spirit Award at a virtual luncheon on Monday, Nov. 9. He is being recognized for his commitment to service, building an open-minded community and for work that has bettered humankind. His dedication includes the creation of the Holocaust Museum Houston's Boniuk Library and Boniuk Center for the Future of Holocaust, Human Rights, and Genocide Studies, and Rice University's Boniuk Institute for the Study and Advancement of Religious Tolerance.

Braun named to fellow program

Dr. Andrea BraunDr. Andrea Braun, assistant professor of medicine in the section of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and associate program director of the BCM Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program, was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians during the Chest Annual Meeting, held virtually Oct. 18-21.

El-Serag among most cited authors

Dr. Hashem El-SeragDr. Hashem El-Serag, professor and Margaret M. Alkek Distinguished Chair in Medicine, leads PLoS Biology/Mendeley's global list of 217 Baylor faculty among the most cited authors in their disciplines. His citation indicators place him in the top-cited 2% of scientists in gastroenterology & hepatology for 2019 and over his career.

Rouce earns NCI award

Dr. Rayne RouceDr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, has won the National Cancer Institute's 2020 Cancer Clinical Investigator Team Leadership Award. The award recognizes outstanding clinical investigators at NCI-Designated Cancer Centers who participate extensively in NCI-funded clinical trials and whose leadership and activities promote a successful culture of collaborative clinical research.

Livestream concert features Baylor musicians

Are you missing concerts and live music? Baylor's Dr. Rajeev Raghavan, Dr. Grace Lee, and Christopher Wong will perform with a small ensemble from the nationally acclaimed Texas Medical Center Orchestra featuring vocalist Michael Gott. The uplifting concert, "Love Can Move the World," will be livestreamed from Miller Outdoor Theater tomorrow, Nov. 7. Mark your calendar and join via this link.

Evenings with Genetics: Ehlers-Danlos information

Evenings with Genetics will present a webinar on “Advances in the Care of People with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome: Hypermobile Type,” Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7 – 8:15 p.m. Speakers are Dr. Shweta Dhar, medical director of Baylor’s Adult Genetics Clinic and associate professor of molecular and human genetics, and Lara Bloom, president and CEO of the Ehlers Danlos Society. Free to attend but registration required.

Bioethics Grand Rounds: Race & COVID-19

Join Bioethics Grand Rounds on Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. for a presentation on "Racism, Crisis Standards of Care and COVID-19," by Dr. Nneka Sederstrom, director, Clinical Ethics Department, Children's Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota. Corrected time: Health Equity Grand Rounds

"Addressing Sexual Harassment in Academic Science, Engineering and Medicine," part of Health Equity Grand Rounds, will be presented Nov. 12 from noon - 1 p.m. by Dr. Frazier Benya, senior program officer at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine. She will provide an overview of the 2018 report on the climate for women in these academic fields and discuss how institutions are responding. Register by Nov. 10 at 5 p.m.

HR event: Financial Wellness Week: Nov. 17-19

Attend financial well-being presentations by Zoom Nov. 17-19 to help prepare for retirement and other financial goals. See schedule, and then register online.
