Flu vaccine attestation deadline Nov. 30

Whether you got your flu vaccine on campus through the Occupational Health Program, at a Baylor clinic or at a community location, all faculty, staff and learners must complete attestation through the BCM Flu Vaccine App, or request an exemption, by Nov. 30. Haven't gotten your shot yet? Walk-in appointments are available at the OHP clinic in the Fannin Tower, 6624 Fannin St., Suite 2000.

Staff goal-setting deadline: The deadline is Nov. 30 for staff managers to hold PY2023 goal discussions and for those goals to be entered in SuccessFactors. Nominations open for Beaudet mentorship award

Nominations are open through Dec. 15 for the Arthur L. Beaudet, M.D. Award for Outstanding Mentorship, open to any Baylor faculty mentor from any discipline and all academic ranks. Eligible candidates must have demonstrated a sustained career of exemplary mentorship at the graduate, postdoctoral, residency, fellowship or junior faculty level across the educational, clinical and research missions of the College. Study opportunity

Researchers at the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital are seeking participants for their Healthy Dads, Healthy Kids (Papás Saludables, Niños Saludables) program to promote healthy eating and active lifestyles. The program is aimed to help Hispanic fathers lose weight while influencing healthy behaviors in their children. Participants will learn how to eat healthier, engage in fun exercises and spend quality time with their children. Hispanic fathers with children between the ages of 5 and 11 years who are Texas Children's Health Plan members are eligible to join. The program will take place at a local YMCA, and participants can receive up to $180 in compensation. For more information, call 713-798-0503 or email healthydads@bcm.edu.

BCM art show

View the incredible artwork of the Baylor community and help support the Texas Children's Arts in Medicine Program at the annual BCM Charity Art Show. The art auction will be held online from Nov. 14-18, and can be viewed here. Art pickup will be the week of Nov. 28. Questions? Email Alyssa Emig.

Education Hackathon

Only one week until the second annual Education Hackathon kick-off event in McMillian Auditorium, Nov. 17, noon-1:30 p.m., with a keynote from active learning expert Dr. Louis Deslauriers. Teams will explore radical solutions to education problems then work to form innovative solutions to the hackathon problem and share their ideas in a competitive "pitch" event on March 8 for the chance to win $25,000 in grant support for their idea. Inaugural Greenberg Lecture

The inaugural Stephen Greenberg Lecture will be held from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m. Nov. 17, featuring the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds Ben Taub Visiting Professor, Dr. Herbert DuPont, professor of infectious diseases and epidemiology at UT McGovern Medical School, on "Restoration of the Microbiome in Disease Control." Attend in person in room M112 at main Baylor or by Zoom. The lecture is funded by the Stephen and Lisa Greenberg Endowed Fund in honor of Dr. Greenberg's service as a clinician and educator at Baylor. The fund also has supported travel stipends for residents' national presentations and the Outstanding Ben Taub Teaching Attending Physician, Senior Medicine Resident and Medicine Intern awards.  


Awards and Recognitions

Faustinella earns advocacy award

Dr. Fabrizia FaustinellaDr. Fabrizia Faustinella, professor of family and community medicine, received the Snyder/Chumley Advocate of the Year Award from the American College of Physicians Texas Chapter (TX-ACP) in recognition of leadership in political, legislative and grass root advocacy. The award was presented at the TX-ACP Annual Scientific Meeting in Dallas, in October, where she gave a presentation to the Board of Directors on the recent work and progress of the TX-ACP Health and Public Policy Committee that she co-chairs with Dr. David Auerbach of UT Southwestern-Dallas.

Friedman honored for career contributions

Dr. Ellen FriedmanDr. Ellen M. Friedman, professor of otolaryngology and director of the Center for Professionalism, received the Texas Association of Otolaryngology 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of her career contributions and her dedication as a clinician and educator.

Lupo joins NCI committee

Dr. Philip LupoDr. Philip Lupo, professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology and director of the Epidemiology and Population Sciences Program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, recently was invited to be a member of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Prevention Steering Committee. The committee addresses the design, prioritization and evaluation of concepts for clinical trials to prevent cancer.

Preidis named associate director of M.D./Ph.D. program

Dr. Geoffrey PreidisDr. Geoffrey Preidis, assistant professor of pediatrics, has been appointed as associate director of Baylor's Medical Scientist Training Program (M.D./Ph.D. Program). A Baylor medical school, residency and fellowship alumnus, Preidis has been a faculty member since 2018. At Texas Children's Hospital, he leads the neonatal gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition consultation service and attends on the pediatric liver service. Preidis’ research focuses on the prevention and treatment of early life malnutrition by targeting the liver-gut microbiome axis, and he has previously had a K08 grant and currently R01 and R03 grants to support this work. Passionate about global health and equity, he has been involved in MSTP leadership since 2019.

Preventza co-chairs aortic disease guideline committee

Dr. Ourania PreventzaDr. Ourania Preventza, professor of surgery, served as the co-chair for the 2022 ACC/AHA Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Aortic Disease: A Report of the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology Joint Committee on Clinical Practice Guidelines. Last updated in 2010, it provides recommendations to guide clinicians in the diagnosis, genetic evaluation and family screening, medical therapy, endovascular and surgical treatment and long-term surveillance of patients with aortic disease. All of Us success!

The Human Genome Sequencing Center team celebrated a big milestone – processing 100,000 samples for the NIH All of Us Research Program. All of Us is an effort to gather health data from one million or more people in the United States to accelerate research that may improve health. The HGSC is among the centers responsible for genome sequencing and reporting. Read more about their work on the BCM blog network.
