HR news: 2023 Open Enrollment period

The 2023 Open Enrollment period is Oct. 10 – 24, 2022, and will be a hybrid approach, including the Virtual Benefits Fair on Oct. 12 plus benefits meetings with HR representatives with both in-person and virtual options, and 30-minute virtual one-on-one consultations. More information here. Registered virtual fair attendees will have on-demand access to all open enrollment resources from the fair until Nov. 11. Questions? Flu vaccine information

Flu vaccines on campus: Check the BCM Flu Vaccine app for dates and times of flu shots on campus and to attest to your flu shot, or submit an exemption request, by Nov. 30. You may also get your flu shot at Baylor Medicine clinics or local pharmacies and ready clinics.
Flu vaccine research trial: Volunteers 18- to 64-years old are needed for a study on how well two different flu vaccines protect individuals from the flu. Volunteers will receive one of two FDA-licensed flu vaccines and will be asked to respond to weekly text messages before and during the flu season and answer a questionnaire at the end of the study. If volunteers experience any flu symptoms, they will be asked to provide a nasal swab. Compensation will be provided. To celebrate the DeBakey High School for Health Professions 50th anniversary, we're collecting video messages from the high school's alumni! Wish DeBakey High School a happy anniversary alongside fellow alumni in a video that will be featured at the celebratory gala.

Do you like math? Volunteer as a tutor!

The Center for Educational Outreach is recruiting volunteers for middle- and high school-level math tutoring at Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan, an HISD middle school located in the Third Ward. Virtual commitments may be possible, but in-person is recommended on a weekly or near-weekly basis from Oct. 24 – Dec. 7. Volunteers will complete orientation and training. Sign up here for the BCM-LEAD (Learning Ecosystem for Academic Development) Coaching Program for math.

Food Services updates

Like other industries, BCM Food Services has been affected by rising costs and delays in production and transportation. Food Services maintained its pricing and operational hours for as long as possible; however, cost-reduction measures and price increases must be made to adapt to today's challenges. Effective Oct. 3, the following changes will occur in Morrison Café at main Baylor:

  • The main dining retail and coffee corner operation will close at 2:30 p.m.
  • A 10% price increase on all onsite items and catering
  • Cost-effective menu choices such as grab-and-go will continue to be evaluated and offered
  • The Alkek Coffee Corner will close

Happy APP Week!

Sept. 26 – 30 marks National APP Week, recognizing the contributions that advanced practice providers make to healthcare. This important group of providers includes nurse practitioners, physician assistants, certified registered nurse anesthetists and others. Meet some of Baylor Medicine's APPs, including nurse practitioners Amber Breindel and Anner Jimenez and physician assistant Holly Clayton, and see even more on Baylor's YouTube channel.

Clinic relocations

The Occupational Health Program clinic, which provides important services for BCM employees and trainees, including TB testing, flu shot administration and more, along with Baylor Family Medicine and the Baylor Medicine Vera Whole Health Employee and Family Care Clinic, which both provide primary and acute care, all are moving to a new location in Fannin Tower, 6624 Fannin St., suites 2000 and 2001, from their current location on the 12th floor of Baylor Clinic, 6620 Main St. Occupational Health and Family Medicine will open in their new location Oct. 3, and the Employee and Family Care Clinic Oct. 10.

National Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week

Upcoming events: National Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Week and Hispanic Heritage Month events start Monday, Oct. 3, with a lunchtime talk by Javier Zamora, the author of the acclaimed memoir "Solito." RSVP for this event here, and see a list of additional events offered virtually by the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, including a Compassionate Conversation on transgender and nonbinary health equity, Oct. 4, a talk on diversity, equity and inclusion in research, Oct. 5, and a Hispanic Heritage Month Poetry Reading, Oct. 10.

Diversity map: Help to complete the map that showcases the amazing diversity of our BCM community. Please take a few minutes and go to the digital map and add your birthplace "map pin."
To add a pin:
- Select the "Additions" tab
- Select "Add Marker – Simple"
- Put your initials, your first name or "Anonymous" in "Entry Name"
- Enter your birth location in "Location"
- Press Submit. The map automatically saves your pin.

Mental health and domestic violence

For Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, the Department of Family and Community Medicine's Mental Health Awareness series focuses on "Mental Health and Domestic Violence: Emphasis on Intimate Partner Violence," in two talks, both from noon – 1 p.m. by Zoom. Give blood

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Donors will earn BCM BeWell wellness points and receive a pair of socks as a thank you for giving blood. Sign up to donate here.

The Center for Professionalism and the Office of the Senior Dean present two talks with Dr. Kaushal Nanavati, assistant dean of wellness and director of integrative medicine and survivorship at Upstate Medical University and health and well-being author. Both will be held in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor and by Zoom.
"Professionalism: From Me and Mine to Us and Ours": Oct. 6, 5-6 p.m., BCM BeWell Points and Ethics CME available.
"Health Promotion: Systematic Wellness and Personal Well-being": Oct. 7, 8-9 a.m., part of the Claire Huckins Education Lectureship Series, includes meditation with chocolate.

Inaugural Fernbach Lecture with author of "This Boy We Made"

The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics will host the first Fernbach Lecture Series for Humanism in Genetics Friday, Oct. 7, at noon in Cullen auditorium. The series is named in honor of Susan Fernbach, the former director of outreach and engagement in the department, who retired in June 2022. The inaugural speaker is Taylor Harris, the author of "This Boy We Made," which chronicles her experience trying to find a genetic diagnosis for her son with developmental differences and other medical problems. The event also will be streamed on Zoom, passcode: 000577. 

Off-Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy will host Off-Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine Friday Oct. 7, 5:30-7p.m. at the Blaffer Museum of Art on the University of Houston campus. Hear seven stories on the theme of "caring." Learn more about the event or register to attend via Zoom.


Awards and Recognitions

Bottazzi and Muñoz honored with Hispanic Heritage Award

Dr. Maria BottazziDr. Flor MunozDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, associate dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine, and Dr. Flor Muñoz, associate professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, are among eight recipients of the Mayor's Hispanic Heritage Award in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. They were selected for their outstanding contributions toward improving the quality of life within the Houston Hispanic community. Mayor Sylvester Turner will recognize each honoree with proclamations during three weekly Houston city council public meetings and present the awards Oct. 19 at the Hispanic Heritage Awards Ceremony.

Foster wins Young Investigator Award

Dr. JenniferFosterDr. Jennifer Foster, associate professor of pediatrics — hematology and oncology, was presented with the Dr. Peter Adamson Young Investigator Award by the Children's Oncology Group. The award recognizes her commitment to a career in early phase pediatric clinical trials, her role in the group's developmental therapeutics program and her demonstrated success in clinical trial design and conduct.

Zoghbi wins Elaine Redding Brinster Prize

Dr. Huda ZoghbiDr. Huda Zoghbi, director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's, a Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor and an investigator with Howard Hughes Medical Institute, has been awarded the second Elaine Redding Brinster Prize in Science or Medicine from the Penn Institute for Regenerative Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She is being recognized for her work pinpointing the underlying, genetic causes of a pair of devastating neurological diseases. Read more about the award here.
