Mejia de Grubb receives early career support

Dr. Maria Mejia de GrubbDr. Maria Mejia de Grubb, associate professor of family and community medicine, was selected to receive an award through the Loan Repayment Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health. The program is designed to support early career investigators by repaying a portion of their student loans in return for a commitment to conduct research relevant to the NIH mission. Mejia de Grubb's work is in the area of medication-assisted therapy among women with opioid use disorder.

Nuila earns nonfiction fellowship

Dr. Ricardo NuilaDr. Ricardo Nuila, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Narrative Medicine Program, was accepted to the fall 2019 class of Logan Nonfiction Fellows at the Carey Institute for Global Good in Rensselaerville, N.Y. The fellowship supports journalists, filmmakers, photographers and documentarians to work on deeply investigated works on the most pressing issues of the day, including social, political, health, environmental, human rights and justice topics. During the fellowship, Nuila will continue to work on his first book, "The People’s Hospital," on safety net hospitals and the care of the underserved, which will be published by Scribner in spring 2021.

CPRIT grant support announced

Baylor College of Medicine has been awarded more than $17.4 million by the Cancer Prevention & Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT) to support new cancer research and programs, core facilities and recruitment of new faculty. Included among this funding is a first-ever grant through CPRIT's Collaborative Action Program for Liver Cancer to Dr. Hashem El-Serag, chair of the Department of Medicine, to support the Texas Collaborative Center for Hepatocellular Cancer. Other grants were awarded to Drs. Yohannes Ghebre, Robin Parihar, Steve Ludtke, Bryan Burt and Jane Montealegre. Read more.

Sept. 5: Team Discovery event (corrected title)

The next Team Discovery session, Teams and Conflict: Challenges and Opportunities, is 3:30 – 5 p.m. on Sept. 5 in room M321/323 in the DeBakey Building at main Baylor, led by Melanie Jagneaux, ombuds at Baylor. Participants will learn about the impact of conflict on team effectiveness and effective skills to manage conflict. Open to faculty, staff and trainees. Learn more about Team Launch.

Sept. 7: Mental health techniques for parents of children with autism

Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital sponsor a two-part program called Stress to Strength for parents of children with autism spectrum disorders and intellectual and developmental disabilities on Sept. 7 and 14 at Avondale House. Offered in English and Spanish, the program trains parents in simple techniques that reduce stress, depression and anxiety. Childcare and family scholarships are available. Register online to attend.

Sept. 7: Opioid use disorder training

The Department of Family and Community Medicine offers a free Opioid Use Disorder Training from 8 a.m. to noon Sept. 7 at 3701 Kirby Dr. The training is intended for physicians who are interested in obtaining a waiver to prescribe buprenorphine for opioid use disorder. This in-person training, in combination with a four-hour online session, will qualify you to apply for the Drug Enforcement Agency waiver and provide up to four hours of CME credit. RSVP to reserve a place.

Sept. 13 – 15: Gastroenterology/hepatology board review course

The Gastroenterology and Hepatology Board Review Course is Sept. 13 – 15 at the Mitchell Basic Science Research Building, 6767 Bertner Ave. The course is open to physicians, trainees and other health professionals to provide an update on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic issues in GI and hepatology and to serve as an intensive review tool for the GI and Hepatology Board Certification / Recertification Examination in 2019. They are Dr. Peggy Goodell, chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology; Dr. Michael Lee, chair of the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Dr. Joseph Petrosino, chair of the Department of Molecular Virology and Microbiology.

Alumni award nominations: Submit by Sept. 27

Nominations are being accepted for the 2020 Alumni Awards that recognize Baylor faculty and alumni for excellence in career achievement and service. Anyone can nominate alumni or faculty for awards; nominations are due Sept. 27. Recipients will be honored at the Alumni Awards Recognition Ceremony and Dinner next April. See more information.
