Coronavirus Information

Mental health resources

Support services: BCM has developed options to assist its learners, trainees, staff and faculty with coping during the COVID pandemic. Read more about the services and resources available on the Coronavirus Response website mental health section and see an overview below. Most of these options are available via telehealth. Call 713-798-0292 for more information or to access these resources.

  • Individual conversation with an experienced counselor for support
  • 1:1 counseling sessions to help manage distress
  • Evaluation and treatment by psychiatrist or nurse practitioner

Support group via Zoom: The Psychiatry Service at Harris Health is offering a daily 8 a.m. support group through Zoom starting Monday, Aug. 16, through Sept. 30. Open to all healthcare professionals at BCM and Harris Health, it is designed to provide support for healthcare professionals dealing with pandemic-related upheaval and stress and may include psychological first aid if applicable and referral to professional help when needed. Healthcare providers can access the support group through Zoom.

Well-being Index: You can also reassess your well-being on a weekly basis with the Well-Being Index, a brief online self-assessment that provides individualized feedback, tools and national/local resources for mental health. View the Coping Card for well-being tips and to find your specific invitation code to access the Well-Being Index.

Awards and Recognitions

Bijanki earns NIH grant

Dr. Kelly BijankiDr. Kelly Bijanki, assistant professor of neurosurgery, has been awarded a $3.5 million R01 Research Project Grant from the National Institute of Mental Health to support her work on the neural circuitry underlying affective function.



Dark named journal editor

Dr. Cedric DarkDr. Cedric Dark, assistant professor of emergency medicine, has been selected as the next medical editor in chief for ACEP Now, the official publication of the American College of Emergency Physicians.



Mills guest edits diversity publication

Dr. Joseph MillsDr. Joseph Mills, professor and chief of vascular surgery and endovascular therapy, served as guest editor of a new Diversity Supplement published as an addition to the August issue of the Journal of Vascular Surgery. Titled "Creating Success in Comprehensive Surgical Care through Diversity, Equity and Inclusion," the supplement includes a broad range of perspectives on the challenges the Society for Vascular Surgery faces to improving opportunity and health outcomes for all. Ethics Grand Rounds: Texas 87th Legislature Update

Join Ethics Grand Rounds on Aug. 18, at 5 p.m., for a virtual presentation on "Texas 87th Legislature Update," by Timothy Ottinger, division director of government relations at CHI St. Luke's Health. CME event: Referring to heart failure program

"Optimal Timing of Referral to an Advanced Heart Failure Program," is Thursday, Aug. 19, presented by Dr. Andrew Civitello, assistant professor of medicine – cardiology, with Dr. Kenneth Liao, professor and chief of cardiothoracic transplantation, and Dr. Alexis Shafii, surgical director of heart transplantation. The target audience is cardiologists, internists, family medicine, physician assistants and nurses; CME available. Learn more and register.

Autism webinar: Genetics 101

The SPARK for Autism program at Baylor Texas Children's will host a Genetics 101 webinar on Friday, Aug. 20, presented by Dr. Robin Kochel, associate professor of pediatrics – psychology, and Dr. Chaya Murali, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics. Register for the webinar.

Director of clinical sciences curriculum needed

The School of Medicine seeks a director of clinical sciences curriculum. This position will provide leadership and oversight for the clinical sciences curriculum under the direction of the associate dean for UME curriculum. Student appeals and grievances committee

Faculty members are needed to serve on the Student Appeals and Grievances Committee. Eligible faculty must have at least three years of experience in teaching, evaluation or assessment of student performance, or mentorship of students and at least one year of prior experience serving on a BCM institutional committee. To apply, submit a cover letter and your CV to studentservices@bcm.edu by Aug. 31.

Adolescent anxiety study enrolling

Participants are needed for Baylor research on the symptomatic presentation and characteristics of children and adolescents with misophonia, or anxiety problems. Eligible volunteers will participate in online assessment sessions and two optional follow-up surveys. Participants must be 8- to 17-years old, fluent in English and have a parent/guardian willing to participate with them. The study includes a phone screening call, a consent and IQ test conducted over Zoom, a clinical interview over Zoom and bio-behavioral tasks done online. Participants will receive $90 compensation for the online assessment sessions ($30 parent and $60 child) and $15 compensation for completion of each of the two follow-up surveys. IT news: Scheduled service interruption

On Friday, Aug. 13, at 11 p.m. through Saturday, Aug. 14 at 10 a.m., the Office of Information Technology will replace end-of-life cybersecurity networking hardware that protects BCM against external cyber attacks and connects BCM to the "outside world" (infrastructure commonly known as the perimeter firewalls). During this time, most data flowing between BCM and all other entities, including TMC affiliates, the commodity Internet and Internet2, will be interrupted. Examples include, but are not limited to, accessing external websites from within BCM, exchanging data sets between Baylor and affiliate institutions, and accessing Citrix/MyApps portal apps (such as Epic) from home, among many others.
