Getting oriented

Medical School Orientation 2022

The medical school class of 2026 arrived on campus this week for orientation (pictured here), which continued off campus for team-building and other activities.

U.S. News & World Report hospital rankings

The College's joint venture hospital, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, ranked nationally by U.S. News & World Report in six adult specialties: 

 

-Cancer – No. 35 

-Cardiology and Heart Surgery – No. 20 

-Gastroenterology and GI Surgery – No. 31 

-Geriatrics – No. 43 

-Neurology and Neurosurgery – No. 27 

-Urology – No. 38 

 

The hospital also ranked as High Performing in Pulmonology and Lung Surgery, and 13 services and procedures also received High Performing rankings. Baylor St. Luke's retained the ranking of No. 3 in the state and No. 2 in Houston and was recognized in the Gulf Coast Region. Other Baylor affiliates also received high national rankings, including MD Anderson Cancer Center, No. 1 in Cancer Care; TIRR Memorial Hermann, No. 2 in Rehabilitation; and Menninger Clinic, No. 10 in Psychiatric Care. Earlier this year, Texas Children’s Hospital was No. 2 in the country in U.S. News & World Report's children's hospital rankings.

Annual compliance education

The FY23 annual compliance education will be assigned in SuccessFactors to all BCM faculty, residents, staff and students, on Monday, Aug. 22. This year's topic will focus on privacy and security. This year, providers will receive CME Ethics Credit for completing the training. This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Keep an eye out for further communications regarding this important education initiative.

InTouch update coming

InTouch, Baylor's intranet, will receive an upgrade in the coming week. Look out for an update for the mobile version of InTouch that will improve navigation and menus and offer a better experience for users on the Safari browser. In addition, a variety of updates to the backend of InTouch will lead to a better browsing experience as we use new tools to make InTouch even better. While waiting for these upgrades, view a refresher on what InTouch has to offer. During the Wednesday, Aug. 3, upgrade, the InTouch intranet system will be unavailable from 7 to 9 a.m.

Preceptors needed for doctoring course

The School of Medicine is recruiting for preceptors for the Patient, Physician & Society (PPS) I/II course for academic year 2022 – 2023. PPS I/II is Baylor's foundational doctoring course for first-year students, teaching basic communication, history and physical exam skills through lectures and small group, hands-on practice sessions. Preceptors will meet with students about every other week (five or six half-days each in the fall and spring) on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons so students can observe and practice the skills they are learning in the course. Interested faculty email Dr. Kamna Bansal or Bridget Angel.

Nominate a 'Wunderkind'

Do you know a 'Wunderkind' – an early career researcher who is not yet an independent scientist or program leader? Nominate them for recognition in the annual STAT Wunderkind program by July 29. STAT is a health and science-oriented news website.

Brody Award and Lecture deadline extended

The deadline has been extended to Aug. 1 to submit nominations for the 2022-2023 Baruch A. Brody Award & Lecture in Bioethics. Presented by the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor, Houston Methodist and the Rice University Department of Philosophy this $10,000 award recognizes junior and mid-level scholars who have made important theoretical contributions to the field of bioethics. The award presentation and lecture will take place on Feb. 7, 2023, at noon. Submit nominations here.

Blood drive

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive Tuesday, Aug. 9, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Those who donate will receive a free T-shirt and eligible participants can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points. Reserve your spot by signing up online.

Book club meeting

The Medical Humanities Program at Texas Children's invites all to attend its quarterly book club featuring "Such a Fun Age" by Kiley Reid, Aug. 9, 3 p.m. Read at your own pace and join the discussion by Zoom (Meeting ID 926 7702 0680, Password 535329), hosted by Dr. Kriti Puri and Dr. Amanda Ruth, both assistant professors of pediatrics. Castro authors healthcare guide

Dr. Danny CastroDr. Danny Castro, associate professor of pediatrics and medical director of respiratory care at Texas Children's, has published a new book with colleagues, "A Practical Guide to Crew Resource Management for Healthcare Teams." See more on the Cambridge Scholars Publishing website.  

Chelu earns PCORI grant

Dr. Mihail CheluDr. Mihail Chelu, associate professor of medicine – cardiology, earned a $31 million grant from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute for a collaborative, multi-institution study to determine the effectiveness and safety of commonly used pacing treatments for cardiac resynchronization therapy in people with heart failure. Lee earns award for bone and mineral research

Dr. Brendan LeeDr. Brendan Lee, chair and professor of molecular and human genetics and Robert and Janice McNair Endowed Chair in Molecular and Human Genetics, received the 2022 William F. Neuman Award from the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research. The award recognizes outstanding and major scientific contributions in the area of bone and mineral research and contributions to associates and trainees in teaching, research and administration. The award will be presented during the ASBMR 2022 Annual Meeting in Austin in September. 

Equity Trailblazer Award recipients

Equity Trailblazers

The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion has announced the 2022 recipients of the Equity Trailblazer Award, which recognizes significant contributions and accomplishments in moving Baylor toward being a more diverse and inclusive community. Recipients demonstrate this commitment through leadership in recruitment, retention and advancement efforts, teaching, mentoring, research, multicultural programming, cultural competency and humility, community outreach activities and/or other initiatives. The 2022 trainee honoree is Dr. Chantelle Shaw, third-year resident in general psychiatry. The faculty honoree is Dr. Roger Nicome, associate professor of pediatrics – hospital medicine.
