Chao earns early career grant
Dr. Hsiao-Tuan Chao, clinical child neurologist and associate director of the child neurology residency program, was awarded the Child Neurology Foundation's 2018 Pediatric Epilepsy Research Foundation Grant for clinical or basic science research by a child neurologist early in their academic career. The $100,000 grant will be awarded over two years to support Chao's transition from postdoctoral trainee to independent investigator where she will continue to tackle important questions in intellectual disability, autism and epilepsy.
Marsack honored for distinction as PA
Kristina Marsack, assistant professor in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery, physician assistant in the division of plastic surgery and assistant director of surgical advanced practice providers at Texas Children's Hospital, was recognized as a distinguished fellow by the American Academy of Physician Assistants. This recognizes her leadership in medical practice and education, professional involvement, community service and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Poplack a 'Hometown Hero'
Dr. David Poplack, longtime director of the of the Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, was recognized as a Hometown Hero at the June 20 Houston Astros game. The Hometown Heroes Program recognizes people from the Houston area who have helped their community in extraordinary ways. Read more.
Sedlazeck receives genomics grant
Fritz Sedlazeck, assistant professor in the Human Genome Sequencing Center, was awarded the 2018 Plant and Animal SMRT Grant to conduct comparative genomics in the newly discovered European cavefish. The award is sponsored by Pacific Biosciences and Genewiz. Read more.
Cardiology physician news
Dr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine - cardiology, was appointed president-elect of the Heart Failure Society of America. She will serve as president-elect for the 2018-2019 period and president for the 2019-2010 period. Dr. Tina Shah, assistant professor of medicine – cardiology, was designated as a Fellow of American Society of Echocardiography, which recognizes her commitment to the field of cardiovascular ultrasound.

July 19: Breast Cancer Conversations
Breast Cancer Conversations launches Thursday, July 19, at 6 p.m. at the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Center with a discussion on breakthrough breast cancer treatments, led by Dr. Matthew Ellis, medical oncologist, researcher and director of the Lester and Sue Breast Center at Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event is free, but please register. This quarterly education event will offer the latest information about breast cancer research and patient care.
Register now: Clinical Research Methods course
The Clinical Research Methods Intermediate Course will be held July 27, from 3 – 7 p.m. at Baylor Family Medicine, 3701 Kirby Drive, providing hands-on training on the most common statistical procedures used to analyze clinical research data. Register on or before July 23 for an early-bird rate of $500. The course is offered by the Department of Family and Community Medicine and led by Dr. Hamisu Salihu, professor and vice chair of research. Register online.
Research mentor training workshops for faculty
Faculty research mentors are invited to participate in a four-hour workshop focused on skill-building in the following mentoring competencies: aligning expectations, maintaining effective communications, fostering independence and resilience and promoting professional development. The workshop is based on the NIH's National Research Mentoring Network but will be tailored to Baylor. Four workshop dates are offered; to attend, choose your preferred date in this Doodle Poll by Aug. 1. Alumni award nominations
Nominations are being accepted for the 2019 Alumni Awards that recognize Baylor faculty and alumni for excellence in career achievement and service. Anyone can nominate alumni or faculty for awards; nominations are due Sept. 28. See guidelines and nomination categories.
Graduate School transformation
The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences has launched new websites for each of the graduate programs, reflecting the School’s transformed structure to seven interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs from 12 programs. The new websites are for prospective students planning to enroll in August 2019 or later. All current students and those entering this summer will complete their degree within the program in which they are currently enrolled. Faculty, students and staff may access the website for the 12 current programs using their Baylor login from the Current Students page of the graduate school website.
