Huda Zoghbi earns prestigious Kavli Prize   

Huda Zoghbi wins Kavli Prize

Dr. Huda Zoghbi, pioneering neurologist at BCM and Texas Children's Hospital, has been awarded the prestigious 2022 Kavli Prize in the field of neuroscience. She is being recognized for two discoveries – first, of the gene responsible for spinocerebellar ataxia 1 (SCA1), a progressive and often deadly disease in which neurons in the cerebellum and brain stem degenerate, causing loss of balance and coordination as well as swallowing difficulties. Second, for her discovery of the MECP2 gene responsible for Rett syndrome, a developmental disorder that strikes children, mostly girls, causing regression and disability. She is the first Kavli prize winner for BCM and Texas Children's. Read more in this Baylor press release.

Faculty Senate elections

The Faculty Senate 2022 At-Large Elections are now open. All faculty members are encouraged to vote on this ballot for at-large representatives. This year's ballot is part of the Microsoft PowerApps platform and can be accessed on your mobile device as well. Information about the candidates is available on the Faculty Senate intranet site. Please use this link to vote before 11:59 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, to participate in the success of shared governance at BCM.

Instructors needed for new point-of-care ultrasound curriculum

The School of Medicine seeks faculty instructors for its point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum, which will be incorporated in the foundational sciences and clinical years by the end of academic year 2024. The second phase of POCUS curriculum will be development of elective clinical rotations and incorporating POCUS education into clerkships and other clinical rotations. MSTP leadership announced

Dr. Benjamin FrankfortDr. Katherine KingDr. Benjamin Frankfort, associate professor of ophthalmology and neuroscience, and Dr. Katherine King, associate professor of pediatrics-infectious disease, have been named co-directors of the Baylor College of Medicine Medical Scientist Training Program. Frankfort and King will assume leadership of the program, an M.D./Ph.D. training program, which has been continuously funded by an NIH T32 training grant for 46 years, on July 1. Dr. Sharon Plon, the current director, will transition to her new role as assistant dean overseeing dual-degree and pathway programs for the School of Medicine.

CVRI seminar

The Cardiovascular Research Institute continues its virtual seminar series June 8, noon – 1 p.m., with a presentation by Dr. Julieta Palomeque of the University of La Plata, Argentina, on how chronic metabolic stress and glucose changes can induce arrhythmias, apoptosis and other issues. Title IX session

At noon June 9, Baylor's Title IX Office will host a question-and-answer session for community members to ask questions related to Title IX protocol. June's topic will be bystander intervention. Click here to join the meeting.    

Blood drive

The Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center will host a blood drive Tuesday, June 14, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Those who donate will receive a free beach towel and eligible participants can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points. Reserve your spot by signing up online.    

Research Investigator Spring Learning Series

The inaugural Research Investigator Spring Learning Series on Engagement, Communication and Education sponsored by the BCM Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC) will be at noon June 15. Dr. Veronica B. Ajewole from Texas Southern University and Houston Methodist Hospital will give a virtual lecture, "Community engagement across the spectrum of biomedical science: Is this possible?" Register to attend.


Awards and Recognitions

McCowan included in '40 Under 40'

Jayco McCowanJayco McCowan, lead, enterprise portfolio management, with the Baylor Improvement Group, was included in the Houston Business Journal '40 Under 40' list, which honors exceptional business and community leaders. McGowan was recognized for her work as founder and executive director of And I Stand, a nonprofit focused on well-being in minority communities.

Shah honored by Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders group

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah, professor and vice chair in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, received the Achievement in Health & Medicine Award from the Asian Pacific American Heritage Association, presented at the group's 30th annual gala May 14. The event recognizes outstanding Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders who have made significant contributions to the community.  

DeBakey High School ranks high nationally

DeBakey High School for Health Professions, one of our partner schools with HISD with Baylor-developed science and health curriculum, was ranked in the top 100 high schools in the country by U.S. News & World Report. The rankings are based on graduation rates, college readiness of students and other factors.
