Arya earns mentorship award

Dr. Monisha AryaDr. Monisha Arya, assistant professor of medicine, recently received the Mentor of the Year Award from the Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, a program of Baylor's Department of Medicine and the VA Health Services Research & Development Center of Innovation. Her mentorship has included guiding students in writing manuscripts, preparing poster presentations and research grant applications and more.

Rao named to neurocritical care board

Dr. Chethan RaoDr. Chethan Venkatasubba Rao, associate professor of neurology, was elected to the Board of Examiners for the United Council of Neurological Subspecialties neurocritical care section. He also was awarded the Presidential citation from the Neurocritical Care Society for his continued contribution to their neurocritical care research section and elected to the NCS Nominations Committee.

Rivera delivers lecture for Hispanic Heritage Month

Dr. Victor RiveraDr. Victor Rivera, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Neurology, delivered the Visiting Professor Program lecture on "Effect of Migration in Multiple Sclerosis Genetics" on Sept. 18 as part of Hispanic Heritage Month at Biogen, a Massachusetts-based biotechnology company focused on neurological diseases.

Grants support pediatric psychiatry initiatives

Dr. Eric StorchDr. Gabriel Lazaro-MunozDr. Jennifer Blumenthal-BarbyDr. Eric Storch, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and Drs. Gabriel Lazaro-Munoz and Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby, both with the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, are co-principal investigators of a $1.73 million NIH BRAIN initiative grant to study the risks and benefits of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of pediatric nervous system and neuropsychiatric disorders. In addition, Storch and Lazaro-Munoz have received a grant from the National Human Genome Research Institute for a study to identify child and adolescent psychiatrists' knowledge, practices, attitudes, expectations and perceived benefits and risks about the use of psychiatric polygenic risk scores (a research tool that may be developed for the clinical context).


Events

Oct. 7 – 9: White coat recycling

The annual lab coat, white coat and scrubs recycling event, sponsored by the BCM Resource Stewardship and Sustainability Program, is Oct. 7-9. Clean and uncontaminated garments will be accepted in marked bins in the E-hallway by the cafeteria at main Baylor.

Oct. 7 – 11: Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness

In recognition of Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, Baylor is lighting the Cullen building in pink from Oct. 7-11. Members of the Baylor community are invited to show their support by wearing pink on Friday, Oct. 11, based on dress codes within departments. The Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center invites everyone in pink for a group photo at noon in the first floor lobby of the Alkek Building. Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day takes place annually on Oct. 13. Learn more about this disease on the Breast Center website.

Oct. 9: Baylor merchandise sale

Come check out the new merchandise from Baylor College of Medicine and nosh on free cookies, Wednesday, Oct. 9, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. There will be lots of new items, including athletic wear, T-shirts and hoodies, socks, dog leashes and more, plus clearance prices on previous inventory.

Oct. 11: Ethical Conflicts in Care of Immigrants

Diversity and Inclusion Week continues with "Ethical Conflicts in the Care of Immigrants," a panel discussion with Baylor experts Dr. Amy McGuire, Fernando Stein, Karla Fredricks and Elizabeth Chiao, Oct. 11, noon – 1 p.m., Howland Auditorium, Children's Nutrition Research Center, 1100 Bates Ave. See our diversity in action in this video that also highlights our institutional values.

Flu shots on campus

Flu shots continue through the Occupational Health Program. Next week's schedule is included below, but check the OHP calendar for additional dates and locations. Be sure to also complete the online flu shot attestation form.

Call for proposals for BCM/UH collaborative research

Grant proposals are being accepted for projects to stimulate the development of collaborative research teams comprised of investigators from Baylor and the University of Houston. Eight to 10 awards of up to $60,000 will be awarded. Some of the high priority research areas are precision medicine, population health, translational medicine, health disparities and accessibility, and more. Letters of intent are due Oct. 11 by 5 p.m. and full proposals due Nov. 15. See full guidelines.

Open enrollment starts Monday

Open Enrollment for benefits is Oct. 7-21. Learn more about changes to healthcare and retirement plans for 2020 and about new programs, like Ayco financial services, at campus benefits fairs, Oct. 14-16.
