Awards and Recognitions

King to serve on NIH study section

Dr. Katherine KingDr. Katherine Y. King, associate professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, has been invited by NIH's Center for Scientific Review to serve as a member of the Molecular and Cellular Hematology Study Section through June 2025. Membership in an NIH study section is merit-based and provides a unique opportunity to contribute to the national biomedical research effort. King's research work is focused on the responses of hematopoietic stem cells to infection and inflammation.

Plon to serve on advisory council; earns award

Dr. Sharon PlonDr. Sharon Plon, professor of pediatrics - oncology and molecular and human genetics at Baylor and co-director of the Texas Children's Cancer Center's Cancer Genetics and Genomics Program, has been appointed by the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to the National Advisory Council for Human Genome Research until 2020. The council advises government agencies on genetics, genomic research, training and programs related to the human genome initiative. In addition, Plon received the 11th annual Niehaus Southworth Weissenbach Award in Clinical Cancer Genetics from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. As part of the award events, she delivered Medical Grand Rounds on May 3 titled "Genetic Predisposition to Childhood Cancer in the Genomic Era" and consulted with genetics clinicians.

Fellows recognized for abstract

Drs. Kyle Brown, Alan Riley, Danny Castro, Kiyetta Alade, Adam Adler, Mohammad Tcharmtchi and Satid Thammasitboon with the Pediatric Point-Of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) and the Pediatric Critical Care fellowships at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, have submitted the top abstract in the 2019 American Thoracic Society Innovation in Fellowship Education Program. They will be recognized for their project, "Innovating a Mastery Learning Program for Point-of-Care Ultrasound Using the Design-Based Research Model," at ATS 2019, the society's annual conference, May 18 in Dallas.

May 7: Mosaic Town Hall

The next Mosaic Town Hall is Tuesday, May 7, 4 p.m., in Cullen Auditorium. It will include an update on the Mosaic Project, including the HR component and the launch of Success Factors in August, and an overview of the key changes that will affect all employees and those affecting staff who perform HR-related activities for their departments, followed by a Q&A. May 8: Staff Town Hall

May 9: Profiles in Professionalism

The Profiles in Professionalism lecture series continues on May 9 at 4 p.m. in room 201A at main Baylor, with "Fallen: A Transdisciplinary Tale of Disturbance and Recovery," presented by Dr. Nalini M. Nadkarni, a botanist who does research in the forest canopy in Costa Rica. After suffering a life-threatening injury, she now speaks from the patient's point of view about the importance of teamwork and compassion. CME credit available; refreshments will be served.

May 11: Anti-human trafficking training

A training event, Learn to Identify and Fight Trafficking, or LIFT, will be held Saturday, May 11, 9-11 a.m., room M112 at main Baylor. The training highlights the scope of human trafficking, equips participants to recognize signs and provides connections to local resources. Open to healthcare professionals, including physicians, nurses, medical assistants, social workers and others. Co-sponsored by the BCM American Medical Women's Association. The training is free, with breakfast and lunch provided; CME credit available. Register online.

May 11: Diabetes information for teens

Adulting with T1D, an educational outreach event for teens ages 16 and older with type 1 diabetes and their parents, will be held May 11, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Texas Children's Hospital West Campus, 18200 Katy Freeway, focusing on the transition from pediatric to adult care. The event is organized by Dr. Sarah Lyons and Dr. Marisa Hilliard of Baylor and Texas Children's, who also have edited a handbook with several Baylor and Texas Children's co-authors, titled "Transitioning from Pediatric to Adult Care in Endocrinology."

May 11: TMC Orchestra concert

The TMC Orchestra, which includes members from the Baylor community, will perform Mahler’s 3rd symphony, Saturday, May 11, 6 p.m. at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Buy tickets online.

The annual student-organized Bowling Ball is Friday May 24, 7 – 9 p.m. at the University of Houston, benefiting H.O.M.E.S. Clinic. Open to the Baylor community. Get your teams organized now and sign up online.

BSLMC named top teaching hospital

Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, BCM's joint venture hospital, received an 'A' safety grade for 2018 and was recognized as the Top Teaching Hospital by the Leapfrog Group. Leapfrog is a nonprofit organization that serves as an advocate for hospital transparency.

BeWell news: Your spouse/domestic partner is invited to join!

Spouses and domestic partners who are enrolled in one of the BCM Medical Plans are eligible to participate in BCM BeWell and can receive a premium reduction in 2020. Spouses and domestic partners may join challenges and activities, except those that are on-site, like DocTalk and on-site biometric screenings.
