Journal editorial board position named in honor of Bier

Dr. Dennis BierIn honor of Dr. Dennis Bier's contributions to the field of nutrition, the American Society of Nutrition has announced the creation of the Dennis Bier, M.D., Young Career Editor, a new position on the editorial board of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, which is published by the ASN. The new position will focus on training early-career journal editors on the importance of adherence to evidence-based science. Bier, director of the USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center at Baylor and professor of pediatrics – nutrition, served as editor of the journal. Jankovic honored for career achievement

Dr. Joseph JankovicDr. Joseph Jankovic, professor of neurology, Distinguished Chair in Movement Disorders and director of the Parkinson's Disease Center and Movement Disorders Clinic, was selected by the International Neurotoxin Association to receive its Lifetime Achievement Award. He will present a keynote lecture on "Botulinum Toxin: Past, Present and Future" during the next INA congress, TOXINS 2019, in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Jan. 16. He is being recognized for his contributions to the development of botulinum toxin, including BOTOX, which now has wide therapeutic and cosmetic indications.

Phung to head pathology arm for foundation

Dr. Thuy PhungDr. Thuy Phung, associate professor of pathology and immunology, has been appointed the director of pathology strategies for the Sturge-Weber Foundation. The foundation's primary goal is to lead a national effort across 25 clinical care centers in the U.S., including Texas Children's Hospital, to establish a tissue biorepository for research in vascular anomalies.

Dr. Eric Boerwinkle, professor of public health and genetics at UTHealth School of Public Health and associate director of Human Genome Sequencing Center at BCM, presents “A Journey to Personalized Health and Medicine – Landmarks and Challenges” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor.

Jan. 10: DocTalk on 'Medical Quackery'

Join the first DocTalk of 2019 on Thursday, Jan. 10, at noon in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor for a presentation on "Medical Quackery" by Dr. William Fan, professor of pharmacology and chemical biology. DocTalk is an informal series of health talks by Baylor experts; eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Jan. 11: Metabolomic research symposium

The inaugural CPRIT Proteomic and Metabolomic Facility Symposium, hosted by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, is Friday, Jan. 11. 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. in Kleberg Auditorium, highlighting updates in cancer proteomic and metabolomic discovery research. Register online.

Jan. 17: Learn about virtual reality in space

Join an out-of-this-world live-stream workshop by industry and academic experts on the applications of extended and virtual reality in deep space, hosted by the Translational Research Institute for Space Health, or TRISH, at Baylor College of Medicine. Free and open to the public; sign up online.
