Awards and Recognitions

Axelrad named to APA committee

Dr. Marni AxelradDr. Marni Axelrad, professor of pediatrics – psychology at Baylor and clinical program director of Psychology Service at Texas Children's Hospital, was appointed to the American Psychological Association's Advisory Steering Committee for the Development of Clinical Practice Guidelines for a three-year term, effective May 2019. The committee consists of nine nationally recognized psychologists overseeing clinical practice guideline development for the organization of more than 118,000 members.

Chelius elected to role on otolaryngology board

Dr. Daniel CheliusDr. Daniel Chelius, assistant professor of otolaryngology, was elected by the American Academy of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery Board of Directors as the Annual Meeting Program coordinator-elect. In this role, he will serve a five-year term on the board overseeing the annual meetings from 2020 to 2024. The meeting draws 7,000-plus attendees annually from more than 80 countries and more than 250 exhibitors.

Rusk named 'Healthiest School'

The Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk, a partner middle school of Baylor and HISD, was included on the Healthier Generation 2019 list of America's Healthiest Schools. Schools were ranked based on meeting the federal nutrition standards, offering breakfast daily, incorporating physical activities before, during or after the school day, implementing wellness policies and involving parents and the community in decision-making.

Oct. 1: DocTalk on exercise injury prevention

Dr. Theodore Shybut, associate professor of orthopedic surgery, will discuss preventing injury during long-distance running, a timely topic for all those training for the Houston Marathon! Join the discussion Tuesday, Oct. 1, noon in conference room B at the Baylor Medical Center – McNair Campus, and earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.

BCM calendar photo shoots

Photo sessions for the 2020 BCM calendar will be held on Sept. 30, DeBakey Library and Museum, main Baylor; Oct. 2, McNair lobby; and Oct. 4, CNRC lobby (1100 Bates Ave.). All photo sessions will be from 9 – 11 a.m. and 1 – 3 p.m.

National Diversity and Inclusion Week events

Baylor celebrates National Diversity and Inclusion Week annually, and this year's activities focus on immigration. See a full list of events.

  • A Compassionate Conversation: Immigration Care in the First Person, featuring Drs. Fernando Stein and Karla Fredricks, Oct. 2, noon – 1 p.m., Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor.
  • Panel discussion and reception with Drs. Sophia Banu, Jeffrey Kottler and Suni Jani, authors of "Handbook of Refugee Experience: Trauma, Resilience and Recovery," Oct. 3, 5-7 p.m., Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge.

Oct. 3: Preparing Ph.D.s for careers

Dr. Karen Kelskey, author of "The Professor is In: The Essential Guide to Turning your Ph.D. into a Job," will give two presentations at main Baylor on Thursday, Oct. 3:

  • "Hacking the Academic Job Market for Scientists," for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows, noon, room 301A, lunch for first 75 attendees.
  • "Advice for the Advisors," 4 p.m., room 201A, reception to follow. Presented by the Center for Professionalism, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and the Career Development Center.

Oct. 7: 'The Language of Kindness'

Christie Watson, former nurse, patron of the Royal College of Nursing Foundation in London and author of "The Language of Kindness: A Nurse's Story," will present two talks based on her book on Oct. 7:

  • Noon – 1 p.m., Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, main auditorium (4A-300), presented by the Center for Professionalism and the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program; CME credit available.
  • 6-8 p.m., the Health Museum, 1515 Hermann Drive, including an interview with Dr. Ricardo Nuila, director of the Narrative Medicine Program, and a book signing by Watson.

  • 9th annual Alex's 5K Run/Walk and Kids' 1K, supporting autism-related charities in memory of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich, Nov. 2, MacGregor Park, sign up online.
  • Walk to End Alzheimer's, Nov. 2, University Houston Lynn Eusan Park, join the Baylor Memory Walkers.

Flu shots on campus

The Occupational Health Program will offer flu shots at campus locations starting next week. See below for upcoming flu shot dates and locations, and check the OHP calendar for a location near you. Dates and locations will be added so check the calendar regularly. Don't forget to complete the online attestation verifying you received the mandatory flu vaccine.

  • Monday, Sept. 30, 1:30 – 4 p.m., Alkek Lobby, main Baylor.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 1, 8:30 – 10:30 a.m., Baylor Medical Center McNair Campus, conference room A.
  • Tuesday, Oct. 1, 12:30 – 2:30 p.m., Ben Taub Hospital, fourth floor conference room.

The BCM BeWell program is offering relaxing chair massages next week at locations across campus. See dates and locations.

Volunteers needed for dry eye study

Adult volunteers, 22 years of age and older, diagnosed with mild to moderate dry eye are needed to participate in a research study in Baylor's Department of Ophthalmology.
