Resident Chang earns innovation award

Dr. Rocky Chang BrowderSurgery resident Dr. Rocky Chang Browder received the Edward H. Molter Memorial Prize from the Rice Business Plan Competition for the Exact Vascular Access (EVA) device. The device enables safe and efficient vascular access and was developed through the Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center (INSTINCT).

Danielson honored for work in hearing loss prevention

Dr. Richard DanielsonDr. Richard Danielson, associate professor of otolaryngology and manager of audiology and hearing conservation at NASA's Johnson Space Center, was awarded the Safe-in-Sound Award for Excellence in Hearing Loss Prevention for his work on the Acoustics Sub-Working Group of the International Space Station's Multilateral Medical Operations Panel. The sub-working group, which Danielson chairs with NASA's Chris Allen, works to protect the hearing of those who work aboard the ISS. The award was presented at the recent annual conference of the National Hearing Conservation Association.

Davis earns simulation educator certification

Dr. Rachel DavisNurse anesthetist Dr. Rachel Davis has become a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Davis, assistant professor of anesthesiology at Baylor, completed the CHSE exam, which includes four domains: professional values and capabilities, healthcare and simulation knowledge/principles, educational principles applied to simulation, and simulation resources and environments.

March 7: Houston walk for Marfan syndrome

Baylor is a sponsor of the Marfan syndrome Walk for Victory, tomorrow, noon – 3 p.m. at Discovery Green. Join or donate to teams led by Dr. Joseph Coselli, professor of surgery, and Dr. Shaine Morris, assistant professor of pediatrics - cardiology, who are serving as the medical chairs of the event.

March 9: Colon cancer awareness event

Join Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center physicians, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and representatives from the American Cancer Society on Monday, March 9, at 11 a.m. outside the John P. McGovern Texas Medical Center Commons to declare March Colon Cancer Awareness Month in Houston.

March 10: BCM BeWell Wellness Fair

The BCM BeWell 4th annual Wellness Fair is Tuesday, March 10, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge and the Baylor courtyard. Talk to experts in otolaryngology, ob/gyn, surgery specialties, physical activity, nutrition and more, and learn about the human body through interactive inflatable organ models. March 11: DocTalk on neck and back pain

DocTalk resumes Wednesday, March 11, noon – 1 p.m. in Kleberg Auditorium, with Dr. Krishna Shah and Dr. David Xu speaking on neck and back pain. DocTalk is an informal series of lunchtime talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. BCM BeWell Vitality Points available for eligible attendees. Zoom information available here.

March 11 and 12: Student and trainee events

  • The BCM chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society will host its induction ceremony for medical students, residents and fellows on Wednesday, March 11, noon – 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor. This international organization recognizes, supports and promotes the values of humanism and professionalism in medicine.
  • The 20th annual Henry J.N. Taub and James K. Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium is Thursday, March 12, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. Student research posters will be on display in Rayzor Lounge and a keynote address on "Driving Precision Diabetes" by Dr. Ashok Balasubramanyam, professor of medicine and vice president for academic integration at Baylor, will be held in Cullen Auditorium from 12:15 – 1:15 p.m.

Vote for innovative research!

Vote for Baylor's research in STAT Madness, an annual bracket-style competition that looks for the best innovations in biomedicine, sponsored by the health and science publication STAT. Featured in the competition from Baylor is research on the effects of vaping. Vote online now!

Research study opportunities

  • The Department of Ophthalmology is seeking adult volunteers, age 22 and older, diagnosed with mild to moderate dry eye to participate in a research study. For more information about the study or to determine if you qualify, contact April Leger at 713-798-4123 or april.leger@bcm.edu.
  • Researchers at the Children's Nutrition Research Center are seeking healthy infants 4 months old and younger for a study to determine if a quick skin reading can provide valuable information about what infants eat. Participation includes three in-person study visits to conduct skin readings, body measurements and infant food documentation, plus optional blood and breast milk samples. Volunteers will be compensated up to $180 in prepaid credit cards; free parking.
