Illustration showing the interaction of microorganisms with the environment, and their interactions with one another.
Microbial ecology is the study of microorganisms (e.g., bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses), their interaction with the environment, and their interactions with one another. Whether the “environment” is a healthy child’s gastrointestinal tract, a diseased airway, or a bioreactor system, principles of microbial ecology inform our work, shape the questions we ask, and help us to understand our findings in the context of complex living systems.
