Diversity Week 2022 – Record your video!

The Office of Communications & Community Outreach invites you to participate in this year's College-wide National Diversity & Inclusion Week video. Record a video of you saying the Baylor College of Medicine Mission Statement (view it here) and submit it via this form by Sept. 27 to be featured in the video. We encourage submissions in your native language. We hope to see your face on our screen soon! Videos will be featured in Baylor communications and on our social media during Diversity & Inclusion Week, Oct. 3 - 7.

HR news

IT news

Approximately 300 staff and faculty need to move to a secure authentication method for access to Office 365 services. On the morning of Sept. 28, the Office of Information Technology will implement an enhanced security measure called "Modern Authentication" requiring only the 300 remaining users to upgrade to a supported version of Outlook, re-enroll mobile device in Intune or re-add their email account in the Outlook client. Only the 300 staff/faculty using "Basic Authentication" are impacted by this change; each impacted user has received multiple messages providing instructions for moving to “Modern Authentication.” In the event of service disruption, BCM email can be accessed via https://mail.bcm.edu. New Baylor Clinician Resources launches

Baylor Clinician Resources is a new website with an array of features to support clinician education and development, including an evolving learning library with leading-edge tools for navigating educational opportunities, guidance for developing accredited courses and resources to support professional growth, drive practice transformation and improve patient care. Faculty Opportunities

Research and Populations in Medicine Course: A faculty facilitator is needed for the Research and Populations in Medicine course to support the course director as students learn to apply knowledge in translational research and population health through active learning. The facilitator's administrative efforts and protected FTE will be supported by the Office of Curriculum. See more details on the Faculty Opportunities InTouch page.

Mock interviewers: The Office of Student Affairs and Career Development Center is soliciting faculty participation in the School of Medicine's annual mock interview program that prepares students for the national residency match. Faculty serve as mock interviewers and as mentors for students needing remediation. Mock interviews will be conducted by Zoom; the program requires a two-hour commitment and will run from Oct. 3 – Nov. 17. Learn more and see how to get involved on the Faculty Opportunities page.

Funding opportunity: The Texas Developmental Center for AIDS Research (D-CFAR) is soliciting applications for pilot projects of up to $20,000 that address the intersection of HIV and monkeypox. Research proposals must address both HIV and monkeypox infections. Basic, clinical, behavioral, implementation science and public health projects will be considered. Clinical trials, as defined by the NIH, are not allowed. See the Request for Applications.

McNair Symposium

The 10th annual McNair Symposium will be at 10 a.m. Sept. 27 in Room N315 in the Alkek Building. Keynote speaker Dr. Michelle Monje, professor of neurology and neurological sciences at Stanford Medicine and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator, will present "Synaptic integration of brain cancer into neural circuits: new frontiers for neuromodulation." The poster session for McNair Scholar labs and McNair M.D./Ph.D. Scholars will be at 9 a.m. in Alkek Lobby. Register here.

BCM BeWell swag: Join the BCM Well-Being team on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 1 – 3 p.m. at the CNRC, just outside of Howland Auditorium to score some free BeWell 'swag' from over the years. 

Financial Well-Being Day with AYCO: Join the HR-Benefits and Ayco Teams for a series of financial workshops on Thursday, Sept. 29. A reading and discussion with author of 'Solito'

Author and activist Javier Zamora will read from his acclaimed new memoir "Solito," which chronicles his solo migration journey as a child from El Salvador to the United States, Monday, Oct. 3, noon – 1:30 p.m. in room M112 at main Baylor and by Zoom. His talk, "The Journey: What a Young Child’s Unaccompanied Voyage to America Tells Us About Our Patients," will be followed by a discussion about the health of undocumented people with Dr. Ricardo Nuila, associate professor at Baylor who leads the Humanities Expression and Arts Lab (HEAL), a new program in the School of Medicine that is presenting the event. The first 12 attendees will receive a free signed copy of "Solito." RSVP to attend in person or Zoom.

Compassionate Conversation: Oct. 4, 5 - 6:30 p.m., on transgender and nonbinary healthcare and equity, presented in celebration of LGBT History Month in collaboration with BCM Pride. CME credit will be offered. Register here.
Health Equity Grand Rounds: Oct. 5, noon - 1 p.m., with Dr. Maria Bernard, chief officer of scientific workforce diversity, National Institutes of Health. She will discuss the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in extramural research activities, including the new NIH UNITE Initiative. CME credit will be offered. Register here.

Awards and Recognitions

RGV trauma center honors Mattox

Ice Cream at Baylor

Dr. Kenneth Mattox, distinguished service professor in the division of cardiothoracic surgery and former longtime chief of staff at Ben Taub Hospital, was honored Sept. 20 by the State of Texas for the one-year designation anniversary of the Dr. Kenneth Mattox Trauma Unit at DHR Health’s Level 1 Trauma Center in Edinburg. Through the unit, DHR Health will improve access to critical, comprehensive trauma care for Texans in the Rio Grande Valley and is the first Level 1 Trauma Center in the region.

CPRIT awards Lewis, McKenna

Dr. Michael LewisDr. Katie McKennaThe Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas awarded Baylor $4,249,996 for cancer research. Dr. Michael Lewis, professor at the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, received a Core Facility Support Award for $3,999,996 to fund the patient-derived xenograft and advanced in vivo models (PDX-AIM) core facility of Texas. Dr. Katie McKenna, in the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy, received a High Impact High Risk Award for $250,000 to fund research titled "Targeting Tumors and the Tumor Microenvironment with Banana Lectin Expressing T cells."  

Chao award winners

Dr. Layla AbushamatDr. Daniel CalameDr. Anita CharyThe Chao Physician-Scientist Award provides funding Baylor investigators who are beginning their independent research careers and are in the process of securing a K08, K23 or equivalent grant. Each award provides up to $100,000 in funding, and awards are made possible through the support of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation of Houston. This year's awardees are Dr. Layla Abushamat, instructor in the Department of Medicine – Atherosclerosis and Vascular Medicine; Dr. Daniel Calame, instructor in the Department of Pediatrics – Neurology and Developmental Neuroscience; and Dr. Anita Chary, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine – Health Services Research.
