Carvalho and Sutton earn NICHD grant
Dr. Claudia Carvalho Fonseca, adjunct assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, and her co-PI Dr. V. Reid Sutton, professor of molecular and human genetics, have received a grant from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the NIH, for their project on genetic variants involved in Robinow syndrome and related skeletal dysplasias.
Chakraborty receives Genewiz grant
Dr. Rikhia Chakraborty, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, won a $5,000 Antibody Immuno-Profiling Grant from Genewiz for her project to sequence T-cell receptors in the tumor microenvironment in hopes of designing combinatorial therapies for pediatric cancer. Genewiz provides genomic services, and celebrates leaders and innovations in the field and awards grants during its annual Genewiz Week.
Chen honored for cardiology research
Dr. Changyi Johnny Chen, professor of surgery and of molecular and cellular biology, received the Hans-Peter Krayenbuehl Memorial Award for distinguished work in the field of research of cardiac function during the 2018 International Academy of Cardiology Awards, part of the 23rd World Congress on Heart Disease, Aug.1 in Boston.

Aug. 16: DocTalk
DocTalk returns on Thursday, Aug. 16, with Dr. Kenneth Altman, professor of otolaryngology, and speech pathologist Charisse Wright on voice and swallowing disorders. DocTalk is a series of informal lunchtime talks with Baylor experts on a variety of health topics. Eligible employees who attend can earn BCM BeWell Vitality points.
Aug. 16 & 21: Voter registration on campus
The College will host voter registration drives at main Baylor in partnership with the League of Women Voters on Thursday, Aug. 16, in the E Hallway and Tuesday, Aug. 21, in Alkek Lobby, both from noon to 1 p.m. In addition to registering new voters, services will include verifying and updating voter registration status, changes of address, etc. More information on eligibility and required identification can be found here.
Save the date: Transition medicine conference
The 19th annual Chronic Illness and Disability Conference: Transition from Pediatric to Adult-based Care is Oct. 25-26 in Onstead Auditorium in the MD Anderson Mitchell Basic Sciences Research Building, 6767 Bertner Ave. Sponsored by Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, the conference is for healthcare providers as well as patients and parents; CME credit available. Welcome new graduate and genetic counseling students
Welcome to the newest students in Baylor's Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences! The group of 111 new students includes 51 men and 60 women; 46 Texans and 65 non-Texans; and 45 international students representing 15 countries. After a school-wide orientation, students attended welcome receptions for their respective graduate programs, including students in the Program in Quantitative and Computational Biosciences, pictured here with program director Dr. Aleksander Milosavljevic. In addition, the inaugural class of eight students in Baylor's Genetic Counseling Program also has joined the Baylor family starting with an orientation led by program director Dan Riconda.
