IT news: Microsoft coaching

The Information Technology Business Enablement Team offers coaching sessions on Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Enterprise Cloud Storage, Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m. The Microsoft Teams sessions are especially helpful for those who are migrating to Teams telephony. Department and individual sessions also are available by appointment.

Mentor/mentee opportunity

The National Research Mentoring Network, with 22,000 active members, is an NIH-funded program offering a virtual mentoring community and career development opportunities to trainees and faculty. Several BCM faculty are active in the network and deliver mentor training and guidance for colleagues here and in the Texas Medical Center. To learn more about the program as a mentee or a mentor, email Dr. Robert Tillman in the Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development.

Applications open: The Chao Physician-Scientist Award

Applications are being accepted for the 2022 Chao Physician-Scientist Award, which provides one-year awards of up to $100,000 for young investigators at Baylor who are beginning their independent research careers. Basic, clinical and translational research projects will be considered. Applicants must hold a primary full-time appointment at BCM and be in the process of securing a K08 or a K23 grant. The award is made possible through a gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation. Applications are due June 17. Apply online here.

ACGME Clinical Learning Environment

The Office of Graduate Medical Education is seeking faculty, resident and fellow facilitators for ACGME Clinical Learning Environment Review (CLER) Program orientation. There will be two sessions per orientation day to serve as a facilitator. The sessions will be Patient Safety and Quality Improvement from 9:15 a.m. to 10:05 a.m. and Professionalism and Supervision from 10:15 to 11:05 a.m. on June 23, June 30, July 8 and July 29. If you are interested in the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement session for any or all four of the dates, email Dr. Sara Andrabi with your name and specialty. If you are interested in the Professionalism and Supervision sessions, email Dr. Anoop Agrawal with your name and specialty.  

Apply for healthcare improvement certificate program

Applications are open through June 26 for the Certificate of Added Qualification in Healthcare Improvement Project. This advanced-level certificate program through the Institute for Continuing Professional Development in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (I-QIPS) includes fall and spring courses and a capstone project, providing hands-on training and experiences in leading a healthcare improvement project. Open to BCM and affiliated faculty, staff and advanced trainees free of charge, but space is limited. Learn more on the program web page.

Pride Month events

Drag and talent show, hosted by BCM Pride, June 19, 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., at the Montrose Center, 401 Barnard St., second floor. Donation-base admission; all proceeds will benefit LGBTQ+ homeless youth in Houston. Sign up here to join the show!

Volunteer opportunity at the Law Harrington Senior Living Center, an affordable LGBTQ+ affirming senior living center that provides independent-living apartments for low-income individuals and couples who are 62 years and older. The center, located at 2222 Cleburne St., is run by the Montrose Center. This will be an in-person volunteer opportunity on June 24, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., to celebrate residents' June birthdays and interact with them at the senior center. Awards and Recognitions

Fisher to lead general internal medicine

Dr. Joslyn FisherDr. Joslyn (Joey) Fisher, associate professor, will serve as the section chief of general internal medicine in the Department of Medicine after being in this role on an interim basis since 2020. Fisher brings outstanding leadership experience while providing patient care at Smith Clinic and Ben Taub Hospital in the Harris Health System with academic interests in ethics, gender-based violence and mentoring.

Rivera named 'Giant' in his field

Dr. Victor RiveraDr. Victor Rivera, Distinguished Emeritus Professor of Neurology and founding director of the Maxine Mesinger Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, was inducted into the inaugural class of the Giants of Multiple Sclerosis recognition program, a partnership of NeurologyLive and the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers. This premier neuroscience award honors the pioneers, innovators and difference makers in the field of MS and was presented at the consortium's annual meeting earlier this month.  

Walker chair APP advisory committee

Dr. James WalkerDr. James Walker was elected chair of the Advanced Practice Nursing Advisory Committee for the Texas Board of Nursing. The committee provides recommendations and guidance to the board on issues and regulations that impact advanced practice registered nurses. Walker is associate professor and former longtime director of BCM's Doctor of Nursing Practice Program – Nurse Anesthesia.
