Hotez included in list of healthcare leaders

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital Endowed Chair in Tropical Pediatrics, has been named one of Fortune Magazine's "34 Leaders Who Are Changing Health Care." Recognized for his work in research and advocacy, Hotez is a world-renowned expert in neglected tropical diseases, the most common diseases affecting the world's poor.

Robak earns neurology fellowship

Dr. Laurie Robak, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics at Baylor and also with Texas Children's Hospital, was awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship – Parkinson's Disease by the American Academy of Neurology with funding by Lundbeck. The fellowship program has awarded nearly $3 million toward neuroscience research and training in 2017. She and other recipients were recognized at the American Academy of Neurology's 69th Annual Meeting in Boston last week.

Todd to lead surgical congress

Dr. S. Rob Todd, professor of surgery and chief of acute care surgery, was elected vice president of the Southwestern Surgical Congress at the group's annual meeting April 2-5, and will serve as president in three years. He also delivered a talk on surgical leadership at the annual meeting. The organization promotes the advancement of general surgery by representing the interests of academic, community and rural surgeons, surgical residents and medical students through education, advocacy, research and innovation.

Wali honored by group on airway management

Dr. Ashutosh Wali, associate professor of anesthesiology and director of advanced airway management, recently was honored by the Society of Airway Management for his distinguished service to the organization. He completed a two-year term as president in 2016 and also has served in the organization as member, committee member and chair, vice president and board member.

DeBakey ranked among nation's top 20 high schools

U.S. News & World Report has ranked the Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions No. 18 in its 2017 list of the top 20 high schools in the nation. Additionally, DHSHP was ranked as the No. 4 high school in Texas by U.S. News & World Report. The mission of the school is to provide a challenging, well-balanced college preparatory program that focuses on educational experiences in science and the health professions and to further an understanding of our diverse and multicultural community.

Welcome Baylor alumni!

Alumni Reunion 2017 is today and tomorrow, with events scheduled on and off campus. This is the first Alumni Reunion to combine alumni from the School of Medicine, School of Allied Health Sciences and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Be sure to say hi when you see our alumni on campus!

Panel discussion May 1 on O&P devices

The Orthotics and Prosthetics Program in the School of Allied Health Sciences will host a workshop on technology and materials used in the O&P field May 1 at noon in the DeBakey Building, rooms M321 and 323. "Additive Manufacturing: Perspectives and Dimensions" will feature representatives from companies that manufacture orthotic and prosthetic products and devices for an interactive panel discussion on the future of this technology.

Neuroblastoma conference May 3-5

The International Neuroblastoma Research Conference: From Molecular Pathways to Novel Therapies, presented by the Neuroblastoma Program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers is May 3-5 in the Texas Medical Center. This event will bring together experts in the field of neuroblastoma molecular biology, tumor modeling and translational therapeutics with the goal of fostering collaborative efforts to advance neuroblastoma research and improve treatment. The conference is led by Drs. Jason Shohet, Jennifer Foster and Leonid Metelitsa. Register online.

Physicians: review industry payments under Physician Payment Sunshine Act

Since 2013, the Physician Payment Sunshine Act has required applicable manufacturers ("Industry") to report certain payments made to physicians (including fellows). Physicians have until May 15, 2017, to review and dispute Industry payments that will be publically available on the Open Payments Database on June 30, 2017. We encourage Baylor physicians to review the payments reported under their name for calendar year 2016 to verify that it is accurate. For information on how to view and dispute records, see the Physician Sunshine Act page on the Compliance Intranet page.

Help O&P student raise money for nonprofit!

Alex Dahinten, current student/resident in the Orthotics and Prosthetics Program at Baylor, will join an elite team of amputees and able-bodied athletes this summer in climbing the 18,714-foot Antisana volcano in Quito, Ecuador. He is raising awareness and donations for the Range of Motion Project non-profit who provide appropriate prosthetic services and educational opportunities to Central American amputees who could not otherwise afford them. He hopes to raise at least $3,000, which will fund new arms and legs for six local amputees. Support Alex's fundraiser online. Good luck Alex!

Recycling news

After the 8-week nationwide Recyclemania competition, Baylor ranked as the No. 1 medical school in the country for recycling. During the challenge, Baylor recycled four tons of plastic, 156 pounds of aluminum and 51 tons of cardboard and paper – more than 13 pounds per person! This resulted in a diversion of 183 metric tons of carbon dioxide, or the equivalent of 36 cars off the road. Now another competition is underway – the Action for Apes Challenge at the Houston Zoo to see which local school or community organization can recycle the most cell phones and hand-held devices. Drop your old devices in the bin outside 011DR by the Baylor mail room and credit union by April 30. Learn more about Baylor's recycling program.
