Celebrating National Doctors' Day

Doctors' Day 2022

National Doctors' Day was March 30! To celebrate, we asked Dr. Rayne Rouce, Dr. Lee Poythress and Dr. James McDeavitt to answer some common search questions about doctors. Watch here for their answers.

COVID-19 Travel Guidance

Baylor will consider travel for those compliant with the Vaccine Preventable Diseases Policy, including those with an approved exemption, with approval from Department/Unit Leadership. This guidance includes information for job candidates, international travel, quarantine guidance and personal travel reminders.

Microsoft Office 365 upgrade coming soon

All faculty and staff members currently receive a BCM license with Microsoft for Office 365. Within the next few weeks, everyone will receive a license upgrade, which will provide a Microsoft audio conference dial in number. Once the new license has been activated, you will receive an email from "Microsoft Audio Conferencing" macaccount@microsoft.com. This is a valid email. If you have any questions, visit the IT Portal for additional information.

U.S. News and World Report rankings

The 2022-2023 U.S. News & World Report annual list of top graduate schools was released this week. In the research intensive category, Baylor remains among the top 25 medical schools in the nation at 22nd, and in the primary care category, rose to 16th. These rankings place Baylor in the top 15% of all U.S. medical schools. A new survey was completed for graduate schools in the biological sciences category and our graduate school rose to 25th.

Mentors needed

The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics is seeking Baylor faculty to participate as mentors in the All of Us Evening with Genetics Research Program. Mentors will assist underrepresented early career (senior postdoc and new faculty) investigators in advancing their research projects using NIH All of Us Research Program data. The program will kick off with an Underrepresented Biomedical Researcher Faculty Summit on May 19-21. Apply here. Send questions to AllofUsEveningswithGenetics@bcm.edu.

Alpha Omega Alpha nominations

The Baylor College of Medicine Beta Chapter of Alpha Omega Alpha is soliciting nominations of residents, fellows, faculty and alumni for induction in this year's class. Any M.D. or D.O. is eligible for consideration. Alpha Omega Alpha is dedicated to improving care for all by promoting service to others, recognizing educational achievement and encouraging the development of academic and community leaders. Donate your gently worn, like new or new athletic shoes to Sole Loved. Drop off your gently used shoes, April 4 – 22 at the BCM Gym, 8th floor of Garage 6, during operating hours.

Celebrate Earth Day

Participate in Earth Day activities from April 4-22, including recycling your non-soiled scrubs and lab coats (drop off at the BCM Gym) and trading your car for walking shoes for short trips around your neighborhood to see environmental benefits. Likewise, check out the many ways to recycle on campus. Email wellness@bcm.edu with questions.

Advocacy for IDD patients

Baylor's chapter of the American Academy of Developmental Medicine & Dentistry is hosting a virtual panel of physicians and dentists from the Lee Specialty Clinic in Louisville, Ky., on April 5 from 6-7 p.m. The clinic offers a broad range of medical, dental, psychiatric and general healthcare services for patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium

The 9th Annual Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium will take place April 6 from 8:45 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nine renowned scientists will share their research. This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Gregg Semenza, recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Register here.

MoneyTalk on protecting your finances

Register for the next MoneyTalk on "Financial Protection after a Security Breach" presented by the Foundation for Financial Education on April 6 at noon via Zoom. Volunteer opportunity: Kids Meals Inc.

Join your colleagues in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor on Friday, April 8, noon – 1 p.m., to decorate brown lunch bags for Kids' Meals Inc. Brown lunch bags and decorating materials will be provided. Kids Meal Inc. is an organization that focuses on ending childhood hunger in the Greater Houston area. If you cannot attend the event, you can decorate your own brown lunch bags at your convenience. Please see the bag decorating instructions for more information. All decorated lunch bags must be dropped off by Friday, April 8. Our drop-off box locations included:

Nobel Laureate gives genetics lecture

The Department of Molecular & Human Genetics is hosting Dr. Ardem Patapoutian, molecular biologist, neuroscientist and Nobel Laureate, as the speaker for this year's Oshman Lecture April 12 at noon in the Cullen Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public. Following the lecture, there will be a reception for all attendees and members of the Oshman family. A "Conversation Hour" also featuring Dr. Patapoutain will take place April 13 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute auditorium located at 1250 Moursund St., on the 7th floor.

Submit abstracts for Baylor's Health Policy Day

Abstracts are being accepted through April 15 for a poster session as part of the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's annual Health Policy Day, which will be held virtually on May 4. This year's theme is Environmental Justice: How Physical, Social and Structural Surroundings Impact Health. The event is co-sponsored by the Gulf Coast Center for Precision Environmental Health. Awards and Recognitions

Murugesan Palaniappan awarded CPRIT grant

Dr. Murugesan PalaniappanDr. Murugesan Palaniappan, assistant professor of pathology & immunology at the Center for Drug Discovery, has been awarded a $769,179 grant as an Individual Investigator Research Award from the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas (CPRIT). His project entitled "Development of Next-Generation Estrogen Receptor-Mutant Inhibitors for Endocrine-Resistant Metastatic Breast Cancer" will study DNA-encoded chemical libraries to identify and develop specific drug-like probes to target estrogen receptor mutant protein in breast cancer. Palaniappan also is a member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Education Hackathon winners 

The Department of Education, Innovation & Technology sponsored its first Education Hackathon, culminating with a Project Pitch Event. Nine teams presented novel solutions to educational challenges. The top three projects and teams are: 

First place:  Recipient of $25,000 Education Hackathon grant, "UME Introduction to the Practice of Telemedicine": Dr. Farzad Soleimani, Dr. Sarah Bezek, Dr. Roxana Khozein Carrera, Dr. Anisha Turner, Dr. Katie Fisher, Dr. Chris Brann, Benjamin Solder and Anjay Batra. 

Second Place: "HIPPO: Revolutionizing Healthcare Education for Patients and Providers": Dr. Lindsey Minter, Dr. Lee Poythress, Ashley Hayden and Reggie Black. 

Third Place: "Neuroverse: Immersive Neurology Experience": Dr. Fernando Cuascut, Dr. Doris Kung, Dr. Corey Goldsmith, Dr. Alexander Sellers and Catherine Garcia.

A group of Baylor doctors led by Dr. Zeena Nawas, assistant professor of dermatology, helped save a man who had a heart attack on a flight from Houston to Boston. She spoke with KHOU about how she and a team of dermatology residents jumped into action.
