Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Baylor will be closed on Monday, Jan. 17, to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Nationally, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is recognized as a national day of service. See below for opportunities to mark the day and to participate in service opportunities. 

Participate locally: 44th annual Original MLK Day Parade and Festival: Jan. 17, downtown Houston, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. This year's theme is "Be a Drum Major for Justice." Please participate responsibly by wearing a mask. See more information. See a list of service opportunities in the Houston area. Health equity summit: "Righting the Wrongs: Tackling Health Inequities," Jan. 19-20, offered by the Association for American Medical Colleges' Center for Health Justice and the Hastings Center. Featuring prominent national speakers, day one will focus on decisions that led to health equities today, while day two will offer strategies to address inequities through policy, patient care, medical education, research and community collaboration. Baylor COATS: Baylor Community Outreach, Action, Training and Service (COATS) for Excellence and Equity is an institutional initiative comprised of faculty, staff, trainees and students who are committed to advancing our diversity, inclusion and equity goals. Baylor COATS seeks to identify those who are in good standing to join the program. To register, email institutionaldiversity@bcm.edu.

Coming soon: Submissions to BCM's MLK essay contest will be featured in Progress Notes, the student-run blog, and an anti-racism initiative developed by the Department of Psychiatry and the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will be launched.

Nominations open for patient care awards

Nominations are open until Feb. 14 for the 2022 Master Clinician Faculty Award for Excellence in Patient Care and until Feb. 21 for the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. Professionalism associate director

Internal candidates are sought for the position of associate director of the Center for Professionalism, part of the Office of the Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic and Faculty Affairs. This is a part-time position that reports to the director for the Center for Professionalism. Candidates must have an M.D. or Ph.D. at the rank of associate or full professor and a commitment to professionalism. Global health annual report

Innovating Health and Expanding Access, the Baylor Global Health 2021 annual report, is now available to read online. The report features an overview of some of the College's global health initiatives, including the Smart Pod, maternal health in The Gambia and more.

Grow. Perform. Succeed with E-Learning: Learning G.P.S. is the new online learning system for benefits-eligible employees. This month's topic is accountability, including the highlighted course "Developing A Personal Accountability Framework." In this course, you'll learn how to show leadership accountability, implement strategies for setting goals, develop an action plan and complete competing tasks. Education innovation hackathon

The Department of Education, Technology, & Innovation is searching for the next big idea in health professions and health sciences education. Teams will compete for up to $25,000 to develop and grow an innovative project to pitch March 2 to a panel of judges at an event hackathon. A kickoff event will be at noon Jan. 19 in Cullen Auditorium, featuring speaker Grace Rodriguez, CEO of Impact Hub Houston. Rodriguez will share how she has created innovative ecosystems across Houston and programs to uplift women and minority entrepreneurs. To attend the kickoff virtually, register here.

Mental health awareness series

The Department of Family and Community Medicine continues its mental health awareness series with a webinar on Adverse Childhood Experiences, Jan. 24, noon – 1 p.m. The prerecorded webinar will include a live Q&A by Zoom. Register to attend.

DocTalk: weight loss surgery

Join DocTalk on Jan. 25 at noon for a presentation by Dr. Juliet Holder-Haynes, assistant professor of surgery, on benefits of bariatric weight loss surgery for better health. She'll discuss obesity and the health risks associated with it, how to manage weight loss and who to turn to for advanced care. BCMBeWell points available.  Register to attend.

BCM TEDx

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy is hosting TEDxBaylorCollegeofMedicine, the College's first TEDx event, on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The virtual seminar will feature nine speakers from Baylor and the Houston community and will be livestreamed from 7-9:30 p.m. Find more information about the event, the speakers and how to register here.

Rouse named journal editor

Dr. Rayne RouceDr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology and oncology, was recently selected as digital commissioning editor for the journal Blood Advances, a peer-reviewed, open access medical journal published by the American Society of Hematology.

Storch, Guzick and colleagues earn grant for CBT program

Dr. Eric StorchDr. Andrew GuzickDr. Eric Storch, professor and vice chair of psychiatry, and Dr. Andrew Guzick, assistant professor of psychiatry, together with colleagues from the University of North Carolina (Drs. Brenna Maddox, Brianne Tomaszewski, Lauren Brookman-Frazee) and the Harris Center (Dr. Rinita Roberts), received an R34 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health for more than $700,000 to examine the feasibility, preliminary effectiveness and sustainability of a cognitive behavioral therapy program tailored for youth with autism spectrum disorder and anxiety treated in real-world community clinics. This grant aims to develop and evaluate a scalable and effective cognitive behavioral therapy program designed to be delivered by community clinicians with limited autism spectrum disorder training and experience.
