Baylor – Children's Hospital of San Antonio program earns accreditation

Dr. Michelle BarajazThe Baylor – Children's Hospital of San Antonio Pediatric Residency Training Program has been granted continued accreditation status following its recent Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education site visit. This moves the program off of initial accreditation and represents the ACGME's certification as a full-fledged accredited program. This has been achieved in just over a two-year period. The program is under the leadership of Dr. Michelle Barajaz, assistant professor of pediatrics and director of the program, Dr. Sarah Denniston, assistant professor of pediatrics and fellowship director, and Dr. Adam Wolfe, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology.

Showcase of Educational Scholarship today

The Academy of Distinguished Educators will host its 12th annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Friday, Sept. 30, from noon to 3 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. Peer-reviewed posters related to educational initiatives and innovations will be on display; select posters will receive the Educational Scholarship Recognition Award. Stop by to view posters, ask questions of presenters and enjoy refreshments.

Diversity and Inclusion events

National Diversity and Inclusion week will be celebrated at Baylor Oct. 3 – 7. The week's events include a disability history exhibit, a donation drive benefiting Small Steps childcare center, lectures and more – all capped off with the Diversity Showcase Oct. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge. The Baylor community can be interactive participants as well by helping to complete a map that shows all the birthplaces of the Baylor community. See the full schedule of events.

Professionalism talk Oct. 5 on culture of safety

Baylor's Center for Professionalism in Medicine will present Dr. Jo Shapiro, director of the Center for Professionalism and Peer Support and an otolaryngologist at the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, on Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 4 p.m. in Room N315. Her talks are lively and provide practical applications of her insightful experience in the field. She will speak on "Safety Culture: Strategies for Making this Real." Light reception to follow.

Compassion and the Art of Medicine Oct. 7

The next Compassion and the Art of Medicine lecture is Friday, Oct. 7, at 12:10 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium, with Dr. Sherri Onyiego, assistant professor of family and community medicine at Baylor, and Leonid Onyiego. They will talk about their nonprofit, MAJI 4 Life, that provides clean water access to people in Leonid Onyiego's native Kenya. Open to the Baylor community.

CME on Advances in Clinical Psychiatry Oct. 7

Advances in Clinical Psychiatry: Treatment-Refractory Depression will be held on Friday, Oct. 7, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Alford Education Center at the Baylor Medical Center on the McNair campus. This continuing education activity is geared toward healthcare professionals; discounts available for students interested in attending. See the event brochure and register online.

Submission call for Off Script storytelling event

The Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program and the McGovern Center for Humanities and Ethics will host its second storytelling event, Off Script: Stories from the Heart of Medicine, on Oct. 26. The theme is "Borders and Breakthroughs." Members of the Baylor community are encouraged to share a story about physical, experiential or symbolic limits and the kinds of breakthroughs they make possible or prevent. Story submissions are being accepted until Oct. 7. Those selected will be invited to workshop and share their stories. Submit online. Questions? Email Erika Versalovic at versalov@bcm.edu.

Join the Walk4Hearing and other events

The Houston Walk4Hearing is next Saturday, Oct. 8, at 9 a.m. on the University of Houston campus, and Baylor has a team participating. Learn more about this event and other upcoming events in Houston and San Antonio. Benefits-eligible employees who participate in any racing event can earn between 250 to 500 BCM BeWell Vitality points.

Blood drive success

The recent blood drive for the CHI-St. Luke's Blood Center, which provides blood for the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, was a success. There were a total of 28 whole blood donors; when those blood units are separated into red cells, platelets and plasma, it means that 84 patient lives were extended or saved by these generous donors. The next CHI-St. Luke's Blood Center drive will be held on Dec. 20 at main Baylor. Stay tuned for more details!

HR Corner announcement

Human Resources recently evaluated the employee use of HR Corner and based on the results has decided to discontinue these bi-monthly events but will continue to answer any questions/concerns over the phone, via email or in person. Additionally, the Benefits team will host benefit fairs in October throughout the College to answer any benefits related questions. Review the complete schedule for benefit fairs and Open Enrollment meetings.
