McDeavitt elected to rehabilitation medicine group

Dr. Jim McDeavittDr. James McDeavitt, professor and chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation and senior vice president and dean of clinical affairs, was elected as a member at large to the American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine. The organization is dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabling conditions through interdisciplinary rehabilitation research.

2015 Alkek Award in Experimental Therapeutics Recipients

Dr. Ghanashyam AcharyaDr. Benjamin FrankfortDr. Michael ManciniThe Alkek Award for Pilot Projects in Experimental Therapeutics supports preclinical translational research necessary for developing promising therapeutic targets, devices, or diagnostic assays for clinical applications. The recipients of the 2015 award are Dr. Ghanashyam Acharya, assistant professor of ophthalmology, “Stick-On Nanowafer Therapeutic to Treat Eye Injuries”; Dr. Benjamin Frankfort, assistant professor of ophthalmology, “Development of an Automated, Objective, and Non-Invasive Device to Rapidly Determine Contrast Sensitivity in Patients with Glaucoma”; and Dr. Michael Mancini, professor of molecular and cellular biology “Development of Fetal Trophoblast Specific Monoclonal Antibodies.” This award is made possible through a generous gift from the Alkek Foundation.

Flu vaccinations continue on campus

The Occupational Health Program continues flu vaccination for staff, faculty, residents and students. Find upcoming vaccination dates and locations on the OHP website. Benefits-eligible employees can get 200 BCM BeWell Vitality points by providing vaccine documentation.

Neglected tropical diseases focus of conference

Baylor’s National School of Tropical Medicine and Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy will host “The United States and Mexico: Addressing a Shared Legacy of Neglected Tropical Diseases and Poverty” on Sept. 29 and 30, at the Baker Institute. The three-part event will include a student workshop, keynote address and full-day conference. Find more information and register online.

Professionalism talks Oct. 1

Baylor’s Center for Professionalism in Medicine will continue its Profiles in Professionalism Lecture Series Thursday, Oct. 1, with two talks by Dr. Arturo Casadevall, professor in the department of molecular microbiology and immunology at Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health. He will present “Science at a Crossroads: Time for Reform” at noon in Kleberg Auditorium (pizza will be served to the first 125 guests) and at 4 p.m. in DeBakey M321 and M323 (reception following).

Diversity Week events

Diversity Week will be celebrated at Baylor Oct. 5-9 with events for trainees, faculty and staff. Events include a lecture on Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 2 to 3 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium by Dr. Andrew Campbell, associate professor of medical science at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, on “The Rise of the Invisible ‘Man’ Pursuing an Academic Career.” A faculty town hall meeting on diversity at Baylor will be held Thursday, Oct. 8, at 5 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. After an introduction by Dr. Paul Klotman, speakers will include Dr. Alicia Monroe, provost and senior vice president of academic and faculty affairs; Dr. Toi Harris, associate provost of institutional diversity and student services; and Dr. Laura Petersen, professor of medicine – health services research.

Huffington’s Women’s Health Summit to feature Leeza Gibbons

Baylor’s Huffington Center on Aging will host its Women’s Health Summit and Luncheon at River Oaks Country Club on Wednesday, Oct. 28. Leeza Gibbons is this year’s keynote speaker. For ticket information contact Diana Fincher at 713-798-3837 or fincher@bcm.edu.

Volunteers needed for vaccine research

Volunteers are needed for a study on a vaccine for Schistosomiasis, a parasitic infection affecting more than 200 million people worldwide. Study participants should be between 18 and 50 years of age, healthy and willing to come to the BCM Vaccine Research Center for a screening evaluation and additional follow up study visits if qualified.
