Leadership transition at Duncan Cancer Center

Dr. C. Kent OsborneDr. C. Kent Osborne, professor and director of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, is stepping down from his leadership role at the center as of Sept. 1. He will remain on the faculty with the title of founding director of the Duncan Cancer Center. Dr. Helen Heslop, professor, director of the Center for Cell & Gene Therapy and associate director for clinical research at DLDCCC, will serve as interim director during a national search.

Langley, Rabe earn simulation education certification

Dr. Aimee LangleyDrs. Aimee Langley and Cora Rabe, assistant professors in the Doctor of Nursing Practice – Nurse Anesthesia Program, recently completed the examination to become Certified Healthcare Simulation Educators (CHSE). The CHSE is administered through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, a multidisciplinary group whose purpose is to serve a global community of practice by enhancing the quality of healthcare.

Sept. 2: Money Chat about personal finances

Chat with an Ayco coach about organizing your finances, paying off credit card and student loan debt and building an emergency fund on Wednesday, Sept. 2, at noon. It’s the first of a series of drop-in sessions with Ayco financial counseling each Wednesday in September, noon – 1 p.m., via Zoom. Money Chats offer the opportunity to discuss financial planning strategies as well as benefit plan elections for Open Enrollment. See the schedule of topics.

Sept. 4: Talk on racism in America

“Houston, We (Still) have a Problem: Reflections on Racism in Post-Civil Rights America,” will be presented via Zoom Friday, Sept. 4, 12:30 – 1:30 p.m., by Dr. Jonathan Chism, assistant professor of history and fellow in the Center for Critical Race Studies at the University of Houston – Downtown. Sept. 10: Compassionate Conversation reset

“Bystander Interventions that Create More Inclusive Clinical and Learning Environments,” originally set for Aug. 28, has been rescheduled for Thursday, Sept. 10, 5:30 – 7 p.m. If you signed up previously, your registration is confirmed for the new date. Or register online by Sept. 8 to attend this virtual conversation with Dr. Ali Abbas Asghar-Ali.

Register now: Course on cardiometabolic diseases

The inaugural Houston “Prevention Rules for Cardiometabolic Diseases” virtual course offered by the Department of Medicine will be held on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Designed for primary care providers, cardiologists, allied health professionals and endocrinologists, the course offers 7 AMA PRA Category 1 credits and includes lunch. Resource on homeless and COVID care

Dr. Yasmeen Quadri, associate professor of family and community medicine, has contributed to an important resource on the care of homeless people during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Building the Plane While Flying It: Case Studies on COVID-19, Telehealth and Health Care for the Homeless Centers” is available to read through the National Health Center Resource Clearinghouse.

HIPAA refresher course launches Sept. 1

The compliance department rolls out its HIPAA refresher course for Baylor Medicine faculty and clinic staff and faculty at Children's Hospital of San Antonio on Tuesday, Sept. 1. The course includes a short video and quiz that will be assigned in SuccessFactors. Employees required to take the course will receive notification on Sept. 1 and weekly reminders up to the Oct. 2 deadline. Contact the IT Help Desk if you have concerns about accessing the Baylor network or SuccessFactors.

Applications open for cardiovascular research grants

Baylor’s Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) seeks proposals for pilot awards in cardiovascular research that will promote collaboration between investigators and that are likely to lead to externally funded grants in the foreseeable future. Applications will be accepted Sept. 1 – 14. Email CVRI@bcm.edu for more information and application guidelines
