Hellsten honored as outstanding nurse

Melody Hellsten, a pediatric nurse practitioner at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers, a joint program of Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital, was selected as an Outstanding Nurse honoree in this year’s Houston Chronicle Salute to Nurses special section. She was recognized by patients and/or coworkers as someone who has made a tangible, positive impact in the nursing community. Hellsten and other honorees will be recognized at the Salute to Nurses Luncheon May 7 and in the Houston Chronicle on Sunday, May 10.

April 15 Alexander and McNair lectures

Faculty, staff and students are encouraged to attend two lectures that will be held on Baylor’s main campus on Wednesday, April 15. Dr. Laura Roberts, chair of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, will receive this year’s Joan and Stanford Alexander Award in Psychiatry and deliver a lecture On “In Becoming a Physician … Well-being and Professionalism Among Physicians-in-Training” at 10:30 a.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The fourth annual McNair Symposium Distinguished Lecture will be held at 1:30 p.m., also in Cullen Auditorium. Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, professor of pathology at the University of Michigan Medical School, will speak on “The Application of Integrative Sequencing for Precision Oncology.” Both lectures are open to the public.

Ewing sarcoma symposium

The Faris D. Virani Ewing Sarcoma Center at Texas Children’s Cancer and Hematology Centers will host the Inaugural Ewing Sarcoma Symposium 2015 on April 23-24. The symposium will feature 14 invited speakers who are leading experts in sarcoma research from across the United States and Europe. This inaugural event is aimed at transformative and impactful collaborations that will advance the field of Ewing sarcoma research. The event will be held at the Clinical Care Center of Texas Children's Hospital, third floor conference room D0360.04. For more information, contact Radhika.Thiruvenkatam@bcm.edu.

Abstracts accepted for quality and safety conference

The Baylor College of Medicine Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference will be held on Thursday, May 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. The conference will include an interactive poster session for interested faculty, fellows, residents and students to present their work in the area of quality and safety. Submissions related quality and safety, which may include quality improvement projects, patient safety initiatives, educational innovations or similar topics, are encouraged. Deadline for abstract submission is Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 5 p.m. Abstracts will be peer-reviewed. Submit abstracts online. Registration for the conference also is available online.

Financial IQ Challenge

Test your financial know-how! Beginning April 13, Baylor’s human resources will team up with TIAA-CREF to bring you the What’s Your Financial IQ Challenge. This educational challenge will offer important information about financial planning the fun way. Five new questions are added to the challenge daily, and you are automatically entered for a chance to win one of three tablet computers every time you play. RIITE Rally April 23

Baylor’s You FIRST Program will host the first “RIITE” Rally, a carnival event celebrating the new Baylor College of Medicine values of Respect, Integrity, Innovation, Teamwork and Excellence, on Thursday, April 23, from 1-4 p.m., in the main Baylor courtyard across from Rayzor Lounge. Interact with your co-workers, enjoy fun games and try to win great prizes! Shuttle buses will be provided for employees located at Greenway Plaza and Kirby.
