Ellis receives prestigious ASCO award

Dr. Matthew EllisDr. Matthew Ellis, director of the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, was named the recipient of the 2015 American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Gianni Bonadonna Breast Cancer Award and Lecture, an honor given annually to an oncologist for outstanding contributions to basic or translational research in breast cancer and exceptional mentoring abilities. As part of the award, Ellis will receive a one-year fellowship grant from the Conquer Cancer Foundation of ASCO to recruit an early-career clinical or translational breast cancer researcher. Lee honored for contributions to medical ultrasound

Dr. Wesley LeeDr. Wesley Lee, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, was the recipient of the William J. Fry Memorial Lecture Award from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine. The award recognizes an AIUM member who has significantly contributed to the scientific progress of medical ultrasound. Lee is section chief for women’s and fetal imaging at Baylor and a co-director of the Texas Children’s Fetal Center. He was honored with the award at the AIUM 2015 Annual Convention, held March 21-25.

Singh invited speaker at UK cancer conference

Dr. Hardeep SinghDr. Hardeep Singh, associate professor of medicine at Baylor and chief of the Health Policy, Quality and Informatics Program at the Houston VA Center for Innovations in Quality, Effectiveness and Safety, will be an invited plenary session speaker at Cancer Research UK’s third National Awareness and Early Diagnosis Initiative Research Conference in London, being held this weekend. He is speaking on “Research on missed opportunities in cancer diagnosis in the US: Defining, measuring and reducing.”

Strax honored for excellence by TMA

Dr. Richard StraxDr. Richard Strax, associate professor of radiology, is the recipient of the Texas Medical Association Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine at the Silver Level. The award recognizes physicians for their achievements and dedication to teaching and service to academic medicine. He will receive the award at the TMA’s TexMed 2015 in Austin in April and also will be recognized in an upcoming issue of TMA’s Texas Medicine and other TMA publications.

Eagleman to speak at Huffington Spotlight on Health

The Huffington Center on Aging Spotlight on Health, featuring a lecture by Baylor’s Dr. David Eagleman, will be held Wednesday, April 1, at the Junior League of Houston. Eagleman, professor of neuroscience and a New York Times best-selling author, will speak on “How the brain changes itself and what you need to know about it.” Drinks and appetizers at 6 p.m.; lecture at 7 p.m. Tickets are $75. Medical World Americas April 27-29

The Medical World Americas Conference and Expo will be held April 27-29 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston. The event will focus on community health through inventive health policy and will offer a fresh look at managing high risk and rising risk patients. Presenters and exhibitors will showcase important clinical and research breakthroughs that are revolutionizing medicine and treatment of some of the most common conditions, including heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and kidney disease. Baylor participants will include Drs. Paul Klotman, Rachelle Doody, Todd Rosengart, Amy McGuire, Christie Ballantyne and John Foreyt. Find more information and register online.

Symposium at Rice to focus on global health solutions

Baylor faculty, residents and students interested in global health are invited to a free all-day symposium on May 5 focusing on Houston and the Texas/Mexico border region. Global Lens, Local Focus: Applying the Lessons of Global Health to Reduce Health Disparities in the U.S., hosted by the Rice 360°: Institute for Global Health Technologies, will bring together researchers and practitioners who work in low-resource and underserved settings around the world to identify opportunities for biomedical innovation that address gaps in care locally and on the border. Baylor’s Dr. Ann Smith Barnes of the department of medicine and Dr. Deborah Thompson of the CNRC will be among the speakers. RSVP online.

Funding available for junior faculty

The BCM seed funding program supports new investigators at the assistant professor level who are beginning their careers as independent researchers. Basic, clinical and translational research proposals are all welcome. Applicants must be full-time, tenure-track Baylor assistant professors appointed during the past three years. Grants are $30,000 in Fiscal Year 2016 type 1 College funds. Awards must be spent in fiscal year 2016. The application deadline is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8. Find more information.
