Awards and Recognitions

Mack earns early career grant

Dr. Stephen MackDr. Stephen Mack, assistant professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, received an Early Career Development grant from the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation for his project, "Harnessing Viral Mimicry to Target H3K27M-Driven Pediatric Glioma." The $300,000, three-year grant supports the novel research of young investigators.

Medical Student Chapter of TMA earns grant

The Baylor Medical Student Chapter of the Texas Medical Association has received a nearly $3,000 grant from the TMA Foundation to care for Houston's underserved refugee population at the BCM-Alliance Refugee Wellness Fair. Medical students, led by physicians, will provide care and resources for families and individuals at the fair, set for Nov. 9 at the Alliance for Multicultural Community Services, 6440 Hillcroft. Medical students involved in the grant are Avery Haugen, Christopher Wong, Andre Jove and Faheem Bilal with the BCM Global Health Interest Group, and Easton West and Rajadhar Reddy with the BCM TMA Chapter.

Nov. 12: Evenings with Genetics on autism

Evenings with Genetics will focus on "Autism Spectrum Disorders: Current Knowledge and New Directions," Tuesday, Nov. 12, at the Children's Museum, 1500 Binz St. Speakers will include Baylor's Dr. Chaya Murali and Dr. Robin Goin-Kochel as well as a parent speaker of a child with autism. Presented by Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital, the event will include light refreshments at 6:30 p.m. with the program starting at 7 p.m. The event is free but please register. You may also attend via Zoom.

Nov. 13: Spotlight on Science

Precisely Speaking: Spotlight on Science, highlighting research funding through the Office of the President's Precision Medicine/Population Health Initiative, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge. A research poster display will start at 3:30 p.m., with presentations from 4 – 6:30 p.m., followed by a poster session and reception. The event is sponsored by the Office of the President and the Faculty Senate.

Nov. 13: Bioethics Grand Rounds

Dr. Stacey Berg, professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology, will present "Medical Marijuana in the Healthcare Setting" at Bioethics Grand Rounds, Nov. 13, 5 – 6 p.m. in the Rio Grande Conference Room at Houston Methodist. The event is sponsored in part by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy.

Nov. 14: Off Script!

"Dealing with Conflict" is the theme of this storytelling event hosted by the Narrative Medicine Program at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at McGovern Medical School, Room 2.135. Participants include Dr. Fabrizia Faustinella, associate professor of family & community medicine, Dr. Katherine Smith, clinical assistant professor of pediatrics, and Dr. Heena Ahmed, resident in radiology.

You got your flu shot – what's next?

Baylor requires employees and trainees to get a flu vaccine. You do not need to provide a copy of your flu documentation to BCM; however you must complete an online attestation form to verify you have gotten your shot. Flu vaccination is available through the Occupational Health Program, at Baylor outpatient clinics and through community providers or local pharmacies.

Financial Wellness Week

Attend a Financial Wellness workshop Nov. 11 - 14 to learn about the new financial counseling benefit through Ayco, the Emeriti Retiree Health Plan and the addition of a Roth contribution option to the 403(b) plan.
