Awards and Recognitions

Estes honored for career achievements

Dr. Mary EstesDr. Mary Estes, Distinguished Service Professor of virology and microbiology, has been announced as the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Academy of Microbiology. The ASM's premier award honors sustained contributions to the microbiological sciences. Estes' work has focused on norovirus and rotavirus, the major causes of diarrhea and gastroenteritis in children and adults.

Lubega to lead global special interest group

Dr. Joseph LubegaDr. Joseph Lubega, assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and Texas Children's Cancer Center, recently was appointed vice chair of the Global Special Interest Group of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. His responsibilities will include organizing the annual special interest group meeting, engaging members who have an interest in global care, and working to extend the reach of ASPHO beyond the U.S. Lubega previously served as medical director of the Texas Children's Cancer Center's Global Hematology Oncology Pediatric Excellence (HOPE) Program in Uganda.

Baylor honored for wellness program

Baylor College of Medicine was selected as a winner of the C. Everett Koop National Health Award in 2019 for its workplace health promotion program, BCM BeWell. Baylor was among only two awardees, along with additional organizations that received honorable mention. The award honors organizations that have shown both health improvement and economic impact through their wellness programs.

Sept. 17: Connecting Art and Anatomy

In recognition of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death, Baylor and the Consulate General of Italy – Houston host "Leonardo: Connecting Art and Anatomy," 4 p.m., in room N315 in the Alkek Building, presented by Dr. Kevin Petti, professor of anatomy and physiology at San Diego Miramar College and emeritus faculty at San Diego State University. The talk will explore how da Vinci employed dissection techniques in his anatomical sketches and how human dissection influenced the work of Renaissance masters.

Sept. 19: Latino Health Summit

The Latino Health Summit, sponsored by the Hispanic Health Coalition, convenes Sept. 19 at the TMCx Innovation Institute, McGovern building. The event brings together experts in the fields of health, education and policy to engage in a conversation about challenges and opportunities in the Latino community, with the goal of improving the health and wellbeing of the 4.5 million Hispanics in the greater Houston area. Register online.

Sept. 24: Global Health discussion

Dr. Sharmila Anandasabapathy, director of Baylor Global Initiatives and a gastroenterologist, will discuss global health challenges and the development of new technologies to address them in a conversation format with Dr. Elizabeth Yu Chiao, professor of medicine – infectious diseases, presented by the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance, Thursday, Sept. 24, 6 – 8 p.m., at the Baylor Medical Center on the McNair Campus, conference rooms A and B.

Save the date: Annual Acute Hematologic Malignancies Symposium

The annual Acute Hematologic Malignancies Symposium is Nov. 2 in room M112 at main Baylor, bringing together national and international speakers to address recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myelogenous leukemia. Designed for hematologists, oncologists, registered nurses, physician assistants, basic scientists and trainees, and presented by the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center. Disclosure of Outside Interests information

Beginning in FY 2020, the College will be implementing its annual Disclosure of Financial Interests requirement. All covered personnel and investigators will be required to submit a disclosure of financial interest, at least annually, using the Disclosure of Outside Interests tool. Head to the DOI webpage for more information, including a link to the DOI tool that will launch in October.

Volunteer opportunities at local middle schools

Volunteer math tutors are needed for students in grades 6 - 8 at the Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan. Math courses at the school include pre-AP math for 6th and 7th graders and high school algebra and geometry. Sign up online to volunteer as a math tutor. In addition, volunteers are needed to advise middle school students from the Academy at Ryan and the Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk who are participating in school science fairs. Advising sessions are held at the TMC's McGovern building on select Saturdays from October to January and include helping students revise research questions, plan procedures and interpret and summarize data. BCM BeWell encourages employees to increase their daily activity, whether it's by participating in the Getaway to Good Health Challenge or joining a Charity Challenge.
