Johnson to chair neurosurgeons' group
Dr. Jeremiah Johnson, associate professor of neurosurgery, recently was elected chair of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons' Young Neurosurgeons Committee. The committee provides representatives to the AANS leadership, develops future leaders of neurosurgery and provides a channel for young neurosurgeons to impact the direction of the specialty.
Ma named to lifestyle med board
Dr. Xin Ma, adjunct assistant professor of pathology and immunology at Baylor and director of the Houston Institute of Lifestyle Medicine, was elected as research co-chair and a board member of the Asian Society of Lifestyle Medicine at the society's third annual conference, held last month in Korea. The society's mission is to promote health and reform healthcare in Asia through lifestyle medicine education, training and clinical service. Evidence-based lifestyle medicine was recognized by the AAMC as one of five new emerging medical specialties in 2018, and Ma was part of the second group of U.S. professionals to earn the board certification.
McClain earns leadership award
Dr. Kenneth McClain, professor of pediatrics - oncology, received the 2019 George R. Buchanan Lectureship Award from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology in recognition of his work as an international expert in the field and for his service as an accomplished educator, researcher and clinician, committed mentor and effective speaker. It was presented at the 2019 ASPHO Conference in New Orleans last week.
Pflugfelder honored for contributions to ophthalmology
Dr. Stephen Pflugfelder, professor of ophthalmology, delivered the Binkhorst Lecture and received the Binkhorst Medal at the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery / American Society of Ophthalmic Administrators, held May 3-7 in San Diego. This honor is conferred annually on the world's most prominent ophthalmologists and recognizes Pflugfelder for his significant contributions to the science and practice of ophthalmology. His talk was titled, "The Quest for Tear Stability."

May 14: Cancer research lecture
Dr. Steven Rosenberg, chief of the surgery branch and senior investigator with the National Cancer Institute's Center for Cancer Research, will deliver the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations' 2019 Joint Lecture Series in Cancer Research, Tuesday, May 14, 3 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium. A reception will follow in Rayzor Lounge.
May 15: DeBakey Research Awards
The 2019 Michael E. DeBakey Excellence in Research Awards Ceremony and Symposium is Wednesday, May 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. in room M112 at main Baylor. The winners, Dr. Carl Allen, Dr. Christie Ballantyne, Dr. Robert Britton, Dr. Aleksandar Milosavljevic and Dr. Marco Sardiello, were selected for their significant published scientific contributions to clinical or basic biomedical research over the past three years and will present their recent work at the event.
May 16: Faculty Awards Day
Faculty Awards Day is Thursday, May 16, at 4 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium with a reception following, honoring the recipients of the Clark Faculty Service Award, Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Awards, Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson, Jr. Presidential Award for Excellence in Education, John P. McGovern Outstanding Teacher Award, Faculty Awards for Excellence in Patient Care and Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. May 17: Cardiology symposium
The Baylor College of Medicine Igor F. Palacios, M.D., Distinguished Lectureship and Texas Heart Institute Honors Summit in Cardiology is Friday, May 17, 7 a.m. – 3 p.m., at the Denton A. Cooley Building Auditorium. This symposium covers the history and future of cardiac surgery, current strategies in advanced heart failure, different approaches to peripheral interventions, debate between medical management and coronary intervention, and the optimal management of adult congenital heart disease. CME credit available. Register online.
Wear orange and walk for bladder cancer

Review industry payments by May 15
Since 2013, the Physician Payment Sunshine Act has required applicable manufacturers to report certain payments made to physicians (including fellows). Physicians have until May 15, 2019, to review and dispute industry payments that will be publicly available on the Open Payments Database on June 30, 2019. We encourage Baylor physicians to review the payments reported under their name for calendar year 2018 to verify that it is accurate. For information on how to view and dispute records, see the Physician Sunshine Act page on the Compliance Intranet page.
