Awards and Recognitions

Murali honored for best publication by trainee

Dr. Chaya MuraliDr. Chaya Murali, postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Brendan Lee's lab in the Department of Molecular and Human Genetics,will receive the 2020 Richard King Trainee Award for Best Publication from the ACMG Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine. Murali was selected for her paper, "Pediatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument is a Useful Patient‐Reported Outcome Measure for Physical Function in Children with Osteogenesis Imperfecta." The award will be presented at the American College of Medical Genetics annual meeting in San Antonio this March.

Zhang receives translational research award

Dr. Shawn ZhangDr. Xiang "Shawn" Zhang, professor in the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center and a McNair Scholar, is one of two clinical investigators to win Stand Up To Cancer's 2020 Laura Ziskin Prize in Translational Research. Zhang will work with Dr. Leisha A. Emens of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center to further research the availability of immune checkpoint inhibitors for breast cancer patients. They will share a $250,000 grant for their yearlong research project.

Educators recognized

The School of Medicine recently recognized educators with the Clerkship Feedback and Teaching Award for their outstanding abilities in medical education by providing valuable feedback and/or teaching to medical students. See the full list of awardees.

Feb. 10: Precision Grant Rounds

Precision Medicine Grand Rounds continue with "Targeting Cancer-Specific Vulnerabilities," presented by Dr. Ronald DePinho, professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center, Feb. 10, noon – 1 p.m., Denton A. Cooley Auditorium, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center.

Feb. 11: DocTalk on women's heart health

DocTalk continues this Heart Month with a presentation on women's heart health with Dr. Arunima Misra, assistant professor of medicine - cardiology, Tuesday, Feb. 11, at noon in Cullen Auditorium, main Baylor.

Feb. 11 – 13: BeWell presentations

Learn more about the College's BCM BeWell program, including data from the past five years, feedback from the 2019 year-end survey, and plans for the future, at presentations Feb. 11-13; see schedule. Eligible participants who attend in person or via Zoom will receive BeWell Vitality points, and benefits-eligible employees who are not enrolled in the wellness portal can enter a drawing for $50 Amazon gift cards. Feb. 14: Refugee Mental Health & Wellness Conference

The third annual Refugee Mental Health & Wellness Conference, will be held Friday, Feb. 14, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., at the United Way of Greater Houston. Experts from Baylor and other organizations will present on the mental health challenges faced by refugees and best practices for serving refugee and immigrant communities, with keynote talks by Rwandan genocide survivor and author Dr. Hadidja Nyiransekuye, professor at the University of North Texas, and Dr. Gary Barker, a leader in engaging men and boys in advancing gender equality. Geared toward mental health professionals and trainees, social workers, educators and other service providers.

Clinical scientist training opportunity

Applications are open for the Clinical Scientist Training Program for the 2020-21 academic year. This program trains BCM junior faculty, fellows and senior residents for careers in academic research. It awards Ph.D. and M.S. degrees in clinical research through the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and a one-year Certificate of Added Qualification in clinical investigation. Research news: Solution for resistant infections

Baylor researchers have implemented a clinical solution for antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections. Called TAILOR (Tailored Antibacterials and Innovative Laboratories for phage Research), the initiative is currently open to consultations about preparing and delivering FDA-approved anti-bacterial viruses – phages – tailored to target specific antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections in patients.
