Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center
The Interdisciplinary Surgical Technology and Innovation Center (INSTINCT) directed by Livia Eberlin, Ph.D. and Feibi Zheng, M.D., M.B.A., is an incubator created by the Department of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine to support our members in the development, testing and commercialization of their creative ideas into new groundbreaking medical technologies.
Our primary mission is to instill innovation as a core value of the members of the Department of Surgery; and to foster and streamline the development of new medical technologies.
Founded in 2013 by William “Billy” Cohn, M.D., INSTINCT was created to provide the resources our members need to take an idea from an early concept through all the stages of technology development, with a focus on supporting the initial steps in the inventive process towards successful IP disclosure and commercialization.
INSTINCT offers a fast track program to take ideas from concept into reality – offering intellectual, financial, design, administrative and networking support to all members and innovators from the Department of Surgery. We are fully aligned and working collaboratively with BCM Ventures, the commercial engine of the College created to support the translation of academic knowledge and intellectual assets for the benefit of society, to accelerate development of inventions from members of the Department of Surgery.
