COVID-19 vaccine clinical trial results

This week, the results of the clinical trial evaluating Pfizer's COVID-19 vaccine in children ages 5-11 were published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Dr. Flor Munoz, associate professor of pediatric infectious diseases, serves as principal investigator of the Baylor/Texas Children's trial site and is a co-author of the paper. The study found that a two-dose vaccine administered 21 days apart was 90.7% effective. Learn more about the study results. The FDA recently granted emergency use authorization for the Pfizer vaccine in this age group.

Walk for colon cancer awareness

It's not too late to join the Baylor team for the Get Your Rear in Gear 5K run/walk, sponsored in part by Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, tomorrow, Nov. 13, at Constellation Field in Sugar Land.

Addressing self-care

The Department of Family and Community Medicine's free virtual mental health awareness series will focus on self-care, Nov. 15, noon – 1 p.m., by Zoom. Register online.

Annual Charity Art Show

The 20th annual BCM Charity Art Show is Nov. 15 – 19, featuring paintings, drawings, photography and other works of art submitted by the Baylor and TMC community. View and bid on the art online. A portion of the proceeds benefit the Texas Children's Hospital Periwinkle Arts in Medicine Program with the rest going directly to artists.

Update on Alzheimer's

The annual Update on Alzheimer's lecture is Nov. 16, at 2 p.m. by Zoom. Dr. Melissa Yu, director of clinical operations in Baylor's Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorder Center, will discuss the latest in Alzheimer's disease research and treatment, including information on new FDA approved medications. Mark L. Entman, M.D., Distinguished Lecture

The Cardiovascular Research Institute presents the Mark L. Entman, M.D., Distinguished Lecture in Cardiovascular Research, Nov. 17, at noon. This annual talk brings in leading experts from across the globe in honor of Dr. Entman and his extensive contributions to cardiovascular research at Baylor. This year's seminar features Dr. Aarif Khakoo of Calico Life Sciences on "Understanding the Causes of Human Aging: Medicine’s Next Frontier." Register to attend the Zoom event.

Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds

Join Bioethics Grand Rounds, jointly sponsored by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy and Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center on Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. for "Identifying and Addressing Moral Distress and Burnout." Speakers are Dr. Colleen M. Gallagher, executive director of clinical ethics and chief of integrated ethics in cancer care at MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Dr. Sophia Fantus, assistant professor in social work at the University of Texas at Arlington. Off Script: Stories on homebound

Join the virtual storytelling event from 6 – 7 p.m. on Nov. 18 to hear stories from the TMC community on "homebound" – a time "home" was redecorated, overpopulated, underappreciated or abandoned altogether. Transitioning the IDD population to adulthood

The SPARK for Autism program at Baylor and Texas Children’s will host a webinar titled, "Growing Pains: Transition Planning for Children and Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities," Friday, Nov. 19, noon – 1:30 p.m. Dinah Godwin and Jennifer Cervantes, both assistant professors in developmental pediatrics, will discuss the transition to adulthood for this patient population, including legal aspects, financial considerations, dating, relationships, family perspectives and post-high school options. STAT Wunderkinds video chat

Join Baylor's Dr. Hsia-Tuan Chao and some of the other brightest minds in science for STAT Wunderkinds: 5 Years of Progress, a video chat on Nov. 19 at noon. STAT Wunderkinds recognizes early career researchers in health and medicine; in this chat they'll discuss their work and journeys over the years. Register to attend.

Pediatric infectious diseases accolades

Dr. Morven EdwardsDr. Debra PalazziDr. Morven Edwards, professor of pediatric infectious diseases, received a 2021 Distinguished Physician Award from the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society. The annual award recognizes a pediatrician who has made significant contributions to the field as a clinician, educator and/or investigator. Dr. Debra L. Palazzi, professor of pediatric infectious diseases, was elected secretary-treasurer of the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society, the world's largest organization of professionals dedicated to the treatment, control, and eradication of infectious diseases affecting children.

Rare disorder designation

Baylor College of Medicine has been designated as a National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) Rare Disease Center of Excellence, joining a highly select group of 31 medical centers as part of an innovative network seeking to expand access and advance care and research for rare disease patients in the United States. Offering a transformative approach to care, the program will help fuel an era of faster diagnoses, new treatment guidelines, best practices and knowledge sharing.
