Coronavirus & Flu Information

Flu shots

Baylor faculty, staff, students and trainees are required by College policy to get an annual flu vaccine and submit attestation of vaccination by Nov. 30, or to submit an exemption by Oct. 31. Exemptions can be requested through the BCM Flu Vaccine app. Flu shots are available on campus throughout October and November and can be scheduled through the Flu Vaccine app and are available at locations in the community. Those who do not complete attestation or receive an exemption will be subject to progressive discipline, the same as with the COVID vaccine.

COVID booster shots

Baylor Medicine is offering COVID-19 Pfizer and Moderna booster shots at its vaccine clinic, 7200 Cambridge, 6th floor, suite 6B. In addition to vaccinating our employees, learners and patients, the clinic is available to your family and friends, regardless of where they received their primary vaccine series. Since federal agencies have now approved a mix-and-match approach to booster shots, even people who initially received the J&J vaccine can get a booster through Baylor Medicine. Appointments are recommended and can be scheduled online through MyChart or by calling 713-798-8600. In addition, COVID initial series and booster shots will be available to BCM employees working at Harris Health at the upcoming flu shot clinic, Nov. 4, 9:30 – 11 a.m. at Ben Taub Hospital. Opportunities at Temple regional campus

Baylor's School of Medicine is expanding to Temple, Texas, the College's first regional campus! Combining the convenience of a big city with small town hospitality, Temple is regarded as one of the top places to live and work in Texas. Two associate dean positions offer an opportunity for current Baylor faculty members to introduce our culture in Temple, which is scheduled to welcome its first class in summer 2023. Hackathon offers big-time solutions

The Human Genome Sequencing Center hosted its third annual Hackathon this month, which brought together nearly 90 programmers from here in Houston and around the world to tackle bioinformatic and computational problems on topics like the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants worked in groups and spent three days writing code and creating new tools that can be used by the scientific community.

IT News: MFA through text

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is available via text message (SMS) as an alternative to using Google Authenticator. If you upgrade your mobile phone or purchase a new phone you will need to re-enroll in MFA. Using SMS is great way to do this. You can use the SMS functionality to receive a token to connect via VPN, then you can re-enroll your new device in MFA. To use SMS for MFA, you need to ensure your mobile number is in SuccessFactors, and that you have verified your number in Password Manager. Here's the two-step process: 1) Add your mobile number in SuccessFactors; 2) Link your mobile number to MFA in Password Manager system.

Professionalism post-COVID

The Center for Professionalism continues its speaker series on Thursday, Nov. 4, 12:15 p.m., with a talk by Dr. Betsy White Williams of the University of Kansas School of Medicine on "Calming the Waters: Professionalism Post-COVID," where she will discuss the association of poor health and well-being with the risk of professionalism lapses and obtaining positive psychological growth after challenging situations. Upcoming events focus on women in science and medicine

The Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Women in Science and Medicine, chaired by Baylor Associate Provost Dr. Toi Harris, will host a business meeting and awards ceremony on Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. Baylor GWIMS members can register online. Harris also will be part of a panel discussion on "The Gendered Impact of the Pandemic on Careers and Institutional Equity Efforts in Academic Medicine," Nov. 8, 11:45 a.m. – 12:45 p.m., as part of the AAMC's Learn Serve Lead 2021: The Virtual Experience. TMC Orchestra concert

Training for evaluations of asylum seekers

The BCM Student Chapter of Physicians for Human Rights is offering a virtual training to conduct medical and psychological forensic examinations for individuals seeking asylum, Saturday, Nov. 13, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Sign up here to receive the Zoom link for the BCM Human Rights and Asylum Clinic.


Awards and Recognitions

HGSC earns grant to improve study processes

Dr. Harsha DoddapaneniDr. Fritz SedlazeckThe Human Genome Sequencing Center was awarded a grant for nearly $250,000 from the National Institute of Standards and Technology for work with the Genome in a Bottle consortium. The HGSC team will develop new reference datasets to improve standardization and calibration in ongoing genome studies. Dr. Harsha Doddapaneni and Dr. Fritz Sedlazeck, both associate professors at the HGSC, are principal investigators.

Papageorgiou earns TIRR Foundation grant

Dr. Dorina PapageorgiouDr. Dorina Papageorgiou, assistant professor of psychiatry, neuroscience and physical medicine and rehabilitation, received a TIRR Foundation Mission Connect grant award for her project, "Decoding causal mechanisms of visual motion perception under induced learning via an individualized MRI‐compatible brain computer interface." Mission Connect endeavors to understand how the central nervous system functions and responds to injury.
