Halloween fun!

Halloween at Baylor

Happy Hallo-week! Students had a fun week at Baylor with Halloween-inspired activities, including pumpkin decorating. Watch out for ghosts and goblins in the halls, too!

Early Voting

Early voting for the Nov. 8 election is under way through Nov. 4. For Harris County registered voters, convenient early voting is available in the Texas Medical Center at the John P. McGovern Commons, 6550 Bertner Ave., on the first floor. Remember to bring a valid ID. Visit the non-partisan League of Women Voters website for more voting resources.

Staff Performance Management: Monday, Oct. 31, 11:59 p.m. is the deadline to complete 2022 staff evaluations, hold employee discussions and complete related tasks in SuccessFactors. Bright Horizons Webinar – Alternatives to a Four-Year Degree: Join Bright Horizons at 2 p.m. Nov. 3 to learn what academic, career and other pathways exist for today's high school graduates, how to identify the best options and set goals based on your student's strengths and interests. Clinical study opportunities

HPV study: Dr. Erich Sturgis, Baylor Medicine physician, shares information in this video about HPV risk factors, prevention and the TRINITY clinical study for men ages 50-64 who wish to be screened for HPV-related throat cancer. Click here to participate in the trial.

Nutrition & Pregnancy: Women in the first trimester of pregnancy are needed for a study of how nutrition throughout pregnancy impacts mothers and infants. The study involves four visits during pregnancy and one postpartum visit with the option to enroll infants. Visits involve body composition measurements, blood and milk samples, surveys on health and food, optical skin measurements and vision testing. Eligible participants must be healthy and meet body mass index criteria. Project deadline: HIV & monkeypox research

The deadline to submit pilot project applications for research at the intersection of HIV and monkeypox is Nov. 1. Funded by the Texas Development Center for AIDS Research (Texas D-CFAR), projects can encompass basic, clinical behavioral, implementation, science or public health research. Submit art for annual show!

Today is the final day to complete the interest form for the 21st annual BCM Art Show and Auction, Nov. 14 – 18. Art of any medium is welcome, and artists will receive up to 60% commission for their auctioned work and the remaining will be donated to the Arts in Medicine Program at Texas Children's Hospital. Compliance talk on business associate agreements

The Office of Compliance presents "Business Associate Agreements in Research: When Do I Need One," noon – 12:30 p.m. Nov. 2. This will be a 20-minute talk followed by a Q&A with John Allen Wright, executive director of research compliance. He will provide information on who is covered under agreements with sponsors, what is a business associate agreement, when it's required and more. Join by Zoom. Cardiovascular Seminar Series

Texas Heart Institute and Baylor's Cardiovascular Research Institute continues the James T. Willerson, M.D., Cardiovascular Sciences Seminar series in Cullen Auditorium, Nov. 2, noon – 1 p.m., with Dr. Kirstin Stanford of Ohio State University School of Medicine. She'll speak on "New Mechanisms for Brown Adipose Tissue to Regulate Cardiovascular Health." CME credit provided. Email cvri@bcm.edu for a calendar invite.

Walks for charity

Alex's 5K & Kids 1K: Sign up here for the race, Nov. 5 at MacGregor Park. The event is held in honor of Alex Jamrich, son of Baylor faculty member Milan Jamrich and his wife who died in an autism-related accident, and raises money for autism organizations. 

Walk to End Alzheimer's: The 5K walk will be held Nov. 5 at the University of Houston's Lynn Eusan Park, 4800 Calhoun Rd, or through walk-from-home options. Baylor has many teams participating; join one here.

Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds

Join Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds at 5 p.m. Nov. 9 for "Patient Perspectives on Reproductive Decision Making: An Interfaith Panel" featuring Claire Horner, J.D., assistant professor in the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy at Baylor and director of the clinical ethics program at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Dr. Deepak Sarma, professor of bioethics, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and professor of religious studies, Case Western Reserve University, and Rabbi Pamela B. Matzuk drug discovery lecture

The Alexander R. Matzuk Lecture in Drug Discovery will be held from 11 a.m. – noon Nov. 10 with Dr. Helen Zgurskaya, George Lynn Cross Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at University of Oklahoma, on "The Two-faced Janus of Multidrug Efflux Substrates and Inhibitors." Applications open for healthcare improvement course

Applications are open through Nov. 13 for the Spring 2023 Leading Healthcare Improvement Course, an advanced level quality improvement leadership training course that will begin Feb. 7. It includes six interactive workshop sessions, pre-session assignments and a poster presentation. The course is eligible for CME and MOC credit, and it is open to BCM and affiliated faculty, fellows/advanced trainees and staff at no charge, although space is limited. Awards and Recognitions

Duraine wins electron microscopy image contest

Lita Duraine, a certified electron microscopist at Baylor and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Institute at Texas Children's Hospital, won an image contest held by JEOL USA, a leading global supplier of electron microscopes, ion beam instruments, mass and NMR spectrometers. Her award-winning entry was a transmission microscopic image of a sciatic nerve axon that subjectively appears to have a small bird inside. Read more and see the image here.
