Astros Spirit Day 2022

Spirit Days for the Houston Astros and Houston Dash were held this week, with faculty, staff and students showing their support through their favorite gear, like these members of the Department of Medicine – gastroenterology team. Flu vaccine and attestation

The Occupational Health Program is offering flu shots to Baylor students, residents, staff and faculty. Use the Baylor Flu Vaccine App to make your reservation and complete attestation by Nov. 30. Upcoming vaccination opportunities include Oct. 14, main Baylor; Oct. 18, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center and Ben Taub Hospital; Oct. 20, Fannin Tower; Oct. 24, McNair; and Oct. 29, Greenway Plaza. You may also get your flu shot at Baylor Medicine clinics, your local pharmacy or other healthcare provider. Regardless of where you were vaccinated, please complete the attestation through the Baylor Flu Vaccine App.

A new website developed by the Office of Research can connect faculty, researchers and students with funding opportunities. Visit the new Research Funding website here to search for funding from a variety of sources, including external and internal opportunities, federal funding opportunities, student and trainee funding and more.

Applications open: Diversity in space health research program

Applications are open for B-SURE (Boosting Spaceflight Underrepresented Research Equity), a program of the Translational Research Institute for Space Health. This one-year program is designed to increase the number of underrepresented researchers in space health, providing mentoring, funding and support for grant writing. Learn more online.

Associate director needed for ID course

The School of Medicine is seeking an associate director for the MS1 Infectious Diseases course. The course will be offered in Terms 4 and 5, around March – June, 2023, and includes lectures and case-based discussions to introduce students to basic principles and clinical aspects of infectious diseases. Drug discovery information session

Join BCM Ventures for an information session about Blue Square Discoveries, a research collaboration between Baylor and Deerfield Management Co., Wednesday, Oct. 19, noon – 1 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium and Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor. Learn how Deerfield is collaborating with Baylor to transform its expertise in genetics and its innovative chemistry platform into commercial drug discoveries. Join BCM Wellness 5k

There's still time to sign up for the 11th annual Baylor College of Medicine Wellness 5K organized by BCM students. Since 2012, this event has provided funds to support student-led health initiatives in the community. This year's BCM Wellness 5K Race/Walk has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 22, and will be in-person, starting at the TMC Commons. Register here. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Talk on nutritional psychiatry

The Center for Space Medicine and the Translational Research Institute for Space Health (TRISH) at Baylor present "Nutritional Psychiatry and the Possibilities for Personalized Nutrition," Wednesday, Oct. 26, at noon in room M112 at main Baylor. Dr. Felice Jacka, professor and director of the Food and Mood Center at Deakin University in Australia and president of the International Society for Nutritional Psychiatry, will discuss this innovative field of study, which established diet as a risk factor and treatment target for common mental disorders. Volunteer with Project C.U.R.E.

Baylor, in collaboration with Project C.U.R.E., will host a volunteer opportunity Oct. 28 to help sort and pack donated medical supplies to be sent to resource-limited countries. The in-person volunteer event will take place at the Project C.U.R.E. facilities at 8303 Kempwood Dr., 77055. Project C.U.R.E. was founded in 1987 to address the staggering shortage of medical resources around the world. If you are interested in volunteering, fill out this sign-up form for more information. Submit art for annual show!

Show your art at the 21st annual BCM Art Show and Auction, Nov. 14 – 18. Proceeds from the show benefit Texas Children’s Hospital’s Arts in Medicine Program. Artists can receive up to 60% commission for their auctioned work and the other 40% will be donated. Any unsold art will be returned to the artist. Art from the show also will be reviewed and selected by Baylor’s Marketing and Graphics Team to potentially be included in the 2023 BCM calendar. Baylor named 'Healthiest Employer'

Baylor has been recognized in the 2022 Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America, an awards program that honors organizations that prioritize the well-being of their employees. Earlier this year, Baylor was inducted into the inaugural Healthiest Employers Hall of Fame and ranked second in Texas among organizations with 10,000-plus employees. Misra to lead AAP section

Dr. Sanghamitra MisraDr. Sanghamitra Misra, professor of pediatrics, has been elected chair of the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Integrative Medicine for a two-year term. As chair-elect, Misra was instrumental in creating the first strategic collaboration between the AAP, Academic Pediatric Association and NIH to improve the quality of rigorous research in integrative pediatrics. Misra also is director of the Integrative Medicine Program and medical director of the Mobile Clinic Program at Texas Children’s Hospital.

Raghubar honored by international pediatric oncology group

Dr. Kimberly RaghubarDr. Kimberly Raghubar, assistant professor of pediatrics – psychology, received the 2022 Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Paediatric Oncology in Barcelona. She received this award for her study, "Screening of Cognitive Symptoms during Treatment for Childhood Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia Predicts Cognitive Functioning Post-treatment."
