Donate to book drive!

Baylor, in collaboration with Houston Bar Association Lawyers for Literacy, will host a book drive from Sept. 1-19. The books will be donated to organizations in the greater Houston area and Free Little Libraries that are set up at community centers and parks. Books for babies and children, as well as adult fiction, can be donated at one of the drop-off locations at main Baylor listed below. If you are coming from outside main Baylor, please email Alex Alanis to schedule a time to donate.

Support for Pakistan flood victims

Pakistan has been experiencing catastrophic floods resulting from monsoon rains that began in June and are unprecedented in scale and scope. It is estimated that this has affected more than 33 million people, causing death, damage, displacement and tremendous losses. Below are four suggested options for those wishing to support humanitarian efforts in Pakistan.

Enrollment open for parent-led therapy study

Researchers in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences are conducting a study that provides a free, parent-based treatment program for children and adolescents 7 to 17 years old who are experiencing anxiety and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms. The program is delivered via videoconference. The SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions) study includes a free, 12-week course on parent-led therapy for children and three assessments over videoconferencing. Parents will learn how to support their children in facing fears while removing behaviors that may maintain anxiety. To learn more about the program, contact spacestudy@bcm.edu.

Thank a postdoc

The Office of Postdoctoral Affairs is hosting a kudoboard for faculty, staff, students and postdocs to post messages and images of appreciation for research postdoctoral associates and fellows. The kudoboard is open for postings through Sept. 20. The final kudoboard will be shared during National Postdoctoral Appreciation Week, Sept. 19 – 23. Submit a kudo here.

Celebrating Dr. Peggy Smith

Join a reception to honor Dr. Peggy Smith as she celebrates 50 years of service to Baylor College of Medicine, Thursday, Sept. 8, 4:30 – 6 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge on the main Baylor campus. TMC Orchestra in Cullen Auditorium

Join the TMC Orchestra and HR's BCM Well-Being for a concert Sept. 13, noon – 1 p.m., in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor and by Zoom. The TMC Orchestra consists of medical professionals from TMC institutions, including several from Baylor. Additional concerts will be held in October and December; stay tuned for more details.

Evenings with Genetics on ASD

Evenings with Genetics presents "From Stress to Strength: You are Not Alone," Sept. 13, at 7 – 8:15 p.m. This Zoom session will discuss how parents can recognize their personal strengths while raising a child with intellectual and developmental disabilities or autism spectrum disorder and will offer parent and child tips to reduce stress. Speakers are Dr. Kathryn Kemere, assistant professor of medicine – transition medicine, Dr. Leandra Berry, assistant professor of pediatrics – psychology, and Susan Fernbach, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, along with a guest parent speaker. Cappuccio earns young investigator award

Dr. Gerarda CappuccioDr. Gerarda Cappuccio, postdoctoral associate at Baylor and the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute (Duncan NRI) at Texas Children's Hospital, was selected as the co-recipient of the prestigious 2022 John M. Opitz Young Investigator Award by the American Journal of Medical Genetics, a leading source of original research on genetic disorders that has a worldwide following among physicians, geneticists and associated research and medical professionals.

Resident Hernandez appointed to 3CPR committees

Dr. Samantha HernandezDr. Samantha Fernandez Hernandez, a resident in neurology, was invited to join the Resuscitation Science Symposium Program Committee and Communications Committee of the Council on Cardiopulmonary, Critical Care, Perioperative and Resuscitation (3CPR) for a two-year term on each committee, starting July 1.

Kauth to lead LGBTQ+ Health Program at VA

Dr. Michael KauthDr. Michael Kauth, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was appointed to the new position of executive director of the LGBTQ+ Health Program in the Veterans Health Administration and was sworn in as a member of the senior executive staff by VA Chief of Staff Tanya Bradsher.

Ph.D. student Masschelin earns Dacso Award

Dacso Award 2022

The 2022 Drs. Magda R. and Michael Dacso Award for Excellence in Research was presented this week to Peter Masschelin, a Ph.D. candidate in molecular and cellular biology and member of the lab of Dr. Sean Hartig, associate professor of medicine – endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism and of molecular and cellular biology. The lab focuses on the cellular contributions to obesity and type 2 diabetes. The Dacso Award, created by Dr. Clifford Dacso, professor of molecular and cellular biology, in honor of his parents, supports a medical, graduate or M.D./Ph.D. student in the molecular and cell biology graduate program who has made a substantial impact in human health science and accomplishment.
