School of Medicine holds White Coat Ceremony

The School of Medicine held the annual White Coat Ceremony on Aug. 12. Donning the white coats is a rite of passage for first-year medical students, as they take an oath affirming their commitment to the highest standards of ethics and healthcare. See more photos from the event here.

GME Professionals Day

The Association of Hospital Medical Education has designated today as GME Professionals Day. Thank you to all the GME professionals who support Baylor's 170+ ACGME accredited programs and non-standard training programs!

Compliance news: Annual compliance education

The FY23 Annual Compliance Education is set to kick off on Monday, Aug. 22, for all Baylor faculty, residents, staff and students. It will run through Sept. 30. This year's topic will focus on information security and privacy. This year, providers will receive CME ethics credit for completing the training. This activity is approved for AMA PRA Category 1 credits. The education will be available through Baylor's online learning system and SuccessFactors, and a notice will appear in your Baylor inbox when the course has been assigned.

HR news: BCM Well-Being

Baylor's award-winning wellness program led by Human Resources has long been committed to improving the overall health of the Baylor community. Now known as BCM Well-Being, the program encompasses BeWell; the BCM LIFE student program; the Well-Being Center, which is the Baylor gym located on the eighth floor of garage 6; and oversight of mothers' aid stations. The initiatives and resources offered through BCM Well-Being strive to address the five branches of well-being: body, mind, environment, financial and community.

Volunteers needed for monkeypox vaccine study

Baylor's Vaccine Research Center is looking for volunteers to participate in a research study that will begin this fall for a monkeypox vaccine. Vote on Faculty Senate constitution amendments

Current faculty members are asked to cast their vote to approve the proposed amendments to the Faculty Senate Constitution. View the proposed constitution amendments (executive summary). Deadline to vote is 11:59 p.m. Aug. 31.


Events

Register to be a bone marrow donor

Be the Match will host a bone marrow registry event at main Baylor in the E-hallway near the cafeteria Monday, Aug. 22, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Visit the Be the Match table for a quick cheek swab that can determine if you may be a match for a patient with a blood disease.

Texas Medical Center Orchestra concert

The award-winning Texas Medical Center Orchestra returns to the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage Aug. 27 at 8:15 p.m. to begin the 22nd season with a performance entitled La Zarzuela Vive!. The orchestra features musicians who also are health professionals, including members from Baylor. The performance is free to attend and also will be livestreamed on YouTube and Facebook. IAMSE Fall 2022 Webcast Series

The Office of Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development has registered Baylor for the upcoming IAMSE Fall 2022 Webcast Audio Seminar Series. The next series will be "The Struggle is Real: Breaking Barriers that Limit Student Success." Sessions will address strategies for identifying and supporting at-risk students and how to recognize and break down barriers that may limit their success. Speakers will provide information on the impact of mental health issues on medical school performance and what teachers can do to support students, including decelerated curriculum and Learning Communities. Sessions begin Sept. 1. Register for free.

Radiation Oncology Research Symposium

On Sept. 2, Baylor's Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center will host the 7th annual Radiation Oncology Research Symposium's keynote presentation, "Matter: Destroyed and Re-Created – When Radiation Oncology Research and Justice Collide." Dr. Christina Chapman, assistant professor of radiation oncology, will be the keynote speaker. The symposium will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in-person at the McNair Campus, 7200 Cambridge Street, in Conference Room B. Register now. A virtual option is available.

Submissions open: Off-Script Storytelling Event

Submit a story for the Texas Medical Center's storytelling hour on the theme of "Caring," — tell a story about care between people — and how it made all the difference. All members of the Houston and TMC communities are invited to submit. Sponsored by the Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy's Narrative Medicine Program. Entries due by Sept. 4; storytelling event is Oct. 5. Learn more and submit.


Awards and Recognitions

Ghebre named finalist for Cure Accelerator Live!

Dr. Hashem El-SeragDr. Yohannes Ghebre is one of four finalists that were announced for the Cures Within Reach, Cure Accelerator Live! for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. Each finalist will present their clinical repurposing research trials to community members representing industry, research, medicine, philanthropy and patient groups. The winning trial will be selected by attendees to receive a grant that supports a $70,000 clinical trial. Ghebre's trial focuses on "A new use of the antacid drug esomeprazole to treat morphea, a chronic connective tissue disease."

DeBakey Research Awards

Congratulations to the 2022 recipients of the Michael E. DeBakey Award for Excellence Research, Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi (joint award), Dr. Joseph Hyser, Dr. Sundeep Keswani, Dr. Katherine King, Dr. Irina Larina and Dr. Scott LeMaire and Dr. Ying Shen (joint award).
