Recognizing a leader

Dr. Alicia Monroe honored

A reception was held earlier this week to recognize Dr. Alicia Monroe for her eight years of service to Baylor, which included leading the College through the accreditation process, building a faculty development program and developing the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Monroe is pursuing a new opportunity at Old Dominion University. Thank you, Dr. Monroe!

IT news: Box migration to Microsoft

BCM is transitioning the College's general-purpose storage from Box to the Microsoft cloud storage platform, OneDrive, and Teams by March 2023. Learn more on how to self-migrate your Box account. HR news: Know your benefits

Bright Horizons Elder Care is now offered with the Bright Horizons benefit program. Benefits-eligible employees can get dedicated support for their loved ones, including personalized guidance from a care coach, in-home needs assessments and specialized referrals, online and mobile options for coordinating care and legal and financial assistance. Cardiovascular research proposals due Aug. 19

Submit proposals by next Friday, Aug. 19, for Cardiovascular Research Institute pilot awards. Proposals should focus on cardiovascular research that will promote collaboration between multiple investigators and are likely to lead to externally funded grants in the foreseeable future. DeBakey Research Award ceremony

The 2022 Michael E. DeBakey, M.D., Award for Excellence in Research ceremony is next Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2 - 4 p.m. Award recipients will be recognized by College leaders and will present a brief scientific lecture. The 2022 recipients are Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi and Dr. Peter Hotez (joint award), Dr. Joseph Hyser, Dr. Sundeep Keswani, Dr. Katherine King, Dr. Irina Larina and Dr. Scott LeMaire and Dr. Ying Shen (joint award). The in-person ceremony is by invitation only, but anyone may tune in to the livestream.

El-Serag earns NCI grant for liver cancer research

Dr. Hashem El-Serag Researchers at BCM received a five-year, $5.5 million-plus grant from the National Cancer Institute for research on liver cancer risk factors and prevention, with the goal of reducing the burden of liver cancer in patients with metabolic dysfunction, including diabetes and obesity. Dr. Hashem El-Serag, chair of the Department of Medicine and professor in the section of gastroenterology and hepatology is principal investigator of this effort. Nelson earns ASHG award

Dr. David NelsonDr. David Nelson, professor of molecular and human genetics and holder of the Cullen Foundation Professorship in Molecular Genetics, is the 2022 recipient of the Victor A. McKusick Leadership Award from the American Society of Human Genetics. The award, which includes a $10,000 prize, is presented to an individual who has exhibited exemplary leadership and vision in advancing the ASHG mission through the promotion and successful assimilation of genetics and genomics knowledge into the broader scientific community in areas ranging from science, medicine, public policy and/or health.

Siddiqui named 'Education Champion'

Noora SiddiquiNoora Siddiqui, programmer in the Human Genome Sequencing Center, was recently named an AWS Education Champion as one of the top 10 national innovators driving digital transformation in higher education via cloud computing. She was honored for her work building one of the first clinical genomics pipelines running at-scale in the cloud for precision medicine efforts.
