Award and Recognitions

King earns Presidential Early Career Award

Dr. Katherine KingDr. Katherine King, professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases and member of the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, has received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), for which she was nominated by the National Institutes of Health. PECASE is the highest honor bestowed by the U.S. government on outstanding scientists and engineers who are beginning their independent research careers and show exceptional promise for leadership in science and technology.

Yoshor elected to SNS

Dr. Daniel YoshorDr. Daniel Yoshor, chair and professor of neurosurgery, has been elected as membership chair of the Society of Neurological Surgeons. Membership in and leadership of the SNS represent substantial accomplishments by academic and educational leaders in neurological surgery. The SNS is the representative body for North American academic neurosurgery department chairs and residency program directors.

Baylor/Ben Taub cardiology team recognized

Dr. Nasser LakkisThe cardiology team at Ben Taub Hospital has earned several recent awards, including the American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines Silver Award for heart failure care. In addition, the team received AHA awards for its treatment of acute coronary syndrome and acute myocardial infarction and an American College of Cardiology – National Cardiovascular Data Registry Platinum Performance Achievement Award. Dr. Nasser Lakkis is chief of the section of cardiology at Ben Taub Hospital and professor of medicine at Baylor.

Upcoming events focus on women in science and medicine

-"Leading through Mindful Storytelling," 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 23, Cubio Innovation Center, 7707 Fannin St., suite 200, hosted by the Association of Women in Science Gulf Coast Houston. This workshop will feature Katie House, a female empowerment and success coach, communicator, speaker and advocate for women in STEM. Open to all STEM professionals, learners and advocates at Baylor, the event is free, but registration is required.
-"Women in Academic Medicine: Where are We Now," an online presentation by Dr. Jennifer Stinson, assistant professor of neurology, Friday, July 26, noon – 1 p.m., part of Taquitos De Sesos, an international didactic program focused on diversity in neuropsychology clinical care and research. July 20 and 27: Family events offer info on autism research

Nearly 70 percent of families impacted by autism have never participated in a research study. Join researchers from Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital on July 20 and July 27 at We Rock the Spectrum in Sugar Land and Missouri City, respectively, for a free family-friendly community event to learn about opportunities to raise your voice in autism research. Space is limited, RSVP required.

Mosaic update: Training; availability of services

Success Factors, the new application for the College's human resources functions, will launch Aug. 5, changing how employees make self-service updates, record time and time off, access learning, and perform HR-related transactions. Learn more online and continue to prepare for this transition with this important information:
-Invitations have been sent from SAP-Mosaic-Training@bcm.edu for training for staff who handle HR functions for their department, employees who will need to perform time recording in the new system, and time approvers/supervisors who will need to approve timesheets. Be sure to complete this training!
-Some services previously available in Employee-Self Service will be unavailable from July 19 through Aug. 4. Specifically, benefit changes (i.e. life events) and bank account/W-4/personal data changes will be unavailable in ESS. For these, contact HR Benefits at ask-insurance@bcm.edu and Payroll@bcm.edu, respectively.

New podcast: Our aging physicians

Physicians and surgeons are aging along with the rest of the population. Tune into the latest episode of Baylor's new podcast to hear cardiovascular surgeon and chair of surgery Dr. Todd Rosengart discuss the changing age demographic of physicians, how it affects them and their patients and what might be done to transition senior physicians to new impactful roles. Call for Abstracts: Showcase of Educational Scholarship

Abstracts are being accepted for the annual Baylor College of Medicine Academy of Distinguished Educators Showcase of Educational Scholarship, Baylor's premier venue for highlighting educational scholarship and research projects. New for this year's event, set for Sept. 20, the Educational Scholarship Recognition Award will be given to the top presenters in the trainee and faculty categories. Facilitators needed for medical student orientation

Faculty members and residents are needed to serve as facilitators for the orientation program PARTAKE (Populations at Risk: Treatment, Advocacy, Knowledge, Experience) July 24 – 27. This program introduces incoming medical students to the ways in which race, sex, geography, sexual orientation, gender identity, mental health, immigration status and disability influence patients' health outcomes. Volunteers needed for flu vaccine study

Volunteers are needed for a study through BCM's Vaccine Research Center to evaluate an experimental adjuvant with an avian flu vaccine to see if it improves the response to the vaccine. You may be eligible if you are between the ages of 18 and 45, in good general health and able to participate for 12 months. Participants will be compensated up to $600 and will receive the 2019/2020 seasonal flu vaccine.
