Hamstra named radiation oncology society fellow
Dr. Daniel Hamstra, William T. Butler Professor and chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology, has been selected as a Fellow for the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) in recognition of his contributions to the field of radiation oncology and his progress in advancing cancer research, education and patient care. The Class of 2021 will be inducted at an Awards Ceremony at ASTRO's 63rd Annual Meeting in October in Chicago.
Koch receives gift for ophthalmology research
Dr. Douglas D. Koch, professor and Allen, Mosbacher, and Law Chair in Ophthalmology, has received a $10 million gift to be used for basic research in optics and corneal biomechanics, clinical research to improve outcomes and safety of lens implantation and to develop and refine new procedures and devices for treating nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The grant is supported by the SRB Charitable Corp., a private foundation based in Fort Worth.
Faculty, alum pen new book
Dr. James Lupski, Cullen Foundation Endowed Chair in Molecular Genetics, and his former doctorate student, Dr. Claudia Gonzaga-Jauregui, are co-editors of a new book "Genomics of Rare Diseases: Understanding Disease Genetics Using Genomic Approaches." It offers readers a broad understanding of current knowledge on rare diseases affecting more than 350 million people worldwide from a genomics perspective and helps the general public understand what genetics and genomics findings mean, what to expect and how to use the information provided by genetic testing. Controlled substance disposal
Baylor's annual on-site pickup and disposal of controlled substances through a reverse distributor will be Wednesday, July 28, 9:30 a.m. - 2 p.m. at main Baylor, first floor of ABBR. Call for Abstracts: Educational Showcase
The Academy of Distinguished Educators hosts a virtual annual Showcase of Educational Scholarship Sept. 17. Faculty, staff and learners are invited to submit an abstract for presentation as poster display by Aug. 2. Areas of interest include content development, instructional design/delivery, learner assessment and educational leadership. Learn more.
Enroll in clinical research courses
Clinical Research Methods – Beginner's Course will be offered by Zoom in August and October by the Department of Family and Community Medicine. The two-day intensive course trains busy healthcare professionals, researchers and students on knowledge and skills necessary to understand important concepts in health research and to conduct simple analysis independently using basic software. Update! Annual compliance education starts July 19
The FY22 Annual Compliance Education is set to kick off Monday, July 19, for all BCM students and paid employees, and will run through Aug. 30. This year's topic focuses on BCM's dedication to non-retaliation for good faith reporting. The education will be available through BCM's online learning system, SuccessFactors, and a notice will appear in your BCM inbox when the course has been assigned.
Study provides parent-led therapy
Baylor researchers are conducting a treatment study that provides free, parent-led cognitive behavioral therapy for children ages 7-13 who have Autism Spectrum Disorder and anxiety symptoms, including fears and worries. The study, titled TeleASD, will deliver therapy through Zoom over a 12-week period under the direction of Dr. Eric Storch. Participants must be in Texas.
