BCM at Pride Celebration

BCM Pride

Faculty, staff and learners from Baylor participated in the LGBTQ+ Pride Celebration in downtown Houston last Saturday. The team from BCM provided information and resources, including information on pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, as well as Baylor branded giveaways. The College community also celebrated Pride Month with residents of the LGBTQ-affirming Law Harrington Senior Center. See more in this video.

Happy Independence Day!

The College will be closed on Monday for the 4th of July holiday. Visit the National Archives website to view the Declaration of Independence signed on July 4, 1776, that separated the original 13 colonies from Great Britain and avowed our unalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. If you're celebrating this weekend, make sure to do so safely by following these tips from Baylor experts.

Adolescent health training program funded

The Baylor College of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Leadership Education in Adolescent Health ( BCM-TMC LEAH) training program has been awarded a five-year grant totaling $2.3 million to support the goal of preparing diverse leaders in adolescent and young adult health through didactic, experiential and research-based interdisciplinary education and training in core health disciplines of medicine, nursing, nutrition, psychology, social work and public health. It is one of seven such training programs funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The LEAH program is the premier federally funded training program for preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals to become leaders in adolescent and young adult care. BCM BeWell news: Join water challenge

Join the BCM BeWell program for a four-week challenge, July 18 – Aug. 12, that will encourage participants to increase their daily water intake. Read all the guidelines and join the challenge here. BCM BeWell points available by completing weekly surveys; participants also can select the "Stay Hydrated" goal on Vitality to earn additional points. Register here. Questions? Volunteer opportunity: Kids' Meals Inc.

Join your colleagues Wednesday, July 13, from 12-1 p.m. in Rayzor Lounge in the Cullen Building to decorate brown lunch bags for Kids' Meals Inc., a local organization that delivers free healthy meals to children in need. Brown lunch bags and decorating materials will be provided. If you cannot attend the event, you can decorate your own brown lunch bags at your convenience (see instructions) and drop off by Thursday, July 14, in suite 176B at main Baylor. Questions? Awards and Recognitions

Bottazzi honored as 'Great Immigrant'

Dr. Maria Elena BottazziThe Carnegie Corp. of New York announced an annual list of Great Immigrants honorees that recognizes naturalized citizens whose contributions and actions have enriched and strengthened our society and democracy. Among the 34 honorees is Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, associate dean of the National School for Tropical Medicine at BCM and co-director of the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. Bottazzi focuses on neglected tropical diseases as well as emerging diseases. She is recognized for her pioneering work on the development of a COVID-19 vaccine with her collaborator Dr. Peter Hotez.   

Bozkurt accepted to leadership program

Dr. Biykem BozkurtDr. Biykem Bozkurt, professor of medicine – cardiology at BCM, has been accepted into the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) fellowship program, an initiative focused on advancing women in academic medicine, dentistry, public health and pharmacy. Bozkurt is among the 28th class and will have the opportunity to improve and develop leadership skills, learn about new career goals and benefit from a network of women leaders in her field.

Mustoe earns young investigator award

Dr. Anthony MustoeDr. Anthony Mustoe, assistant professor of biochemistry and a CPRIT Scholar, was awarded a $600,000, four-year Beckman Young Investigator Award from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation. The award supports promising faculty in the early stages of their careers. His research focuses on discovery and function of RNA structure and dynamics in RNA metabolism.    

Rosen receives lecture award

Dr. Jeffrey RosenDr. Jeffrey Rosen, distinguished service professor of molecular and cellular biology and co-leader of the breast cancer program at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, will receive the William L. McGuire Memorial Lecture Award at the 2022 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium in December. He will present a lecture titled "Leveraging preclinical models for translational breast cancer research" during the symposium. Read more about the award in this press release.    

Scheurer to lead brain tumor consortium

Dr. Michael ScheurerDr. Michael Scheurer, professor of pediatrics – hematology/oncology and co-leader of the cancer prevention and population sciences program at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, was recently named U.S. co-president of the Brain Tumor Epidemiology Consortium for a two-year term. He served as U.S. co-vice president for the last two years and as treasurer from 2012-2020. The goals of the consortium’s international group of researchers are to learn the causes of brain tumors, reduce the incidence through prevention and early detection and improve outcomes for those diagnosed with these diseases.   

Stolar named APA fellow

Dr. Andrea StolarDr. Andrea Stolar, professor in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was elevated to Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and recognized at the association's annual meeting in May. In addition, Stolar was selected for a six-year appointment to the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education standing panel for accreditation appeals in the specialty of psychiatry by the ACGME board at its June 2022 meeting. Stolar also is senior associate dean of student affairs in the School of Medicine.
