June 25: Compassionate Conversations

Two Compassionate Conversations on violence against African-Americans, racism and inequality, and community healing will be held June 25 by Zoom, from noon to 1:30 p.m. and again from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The formats for both will be the same: Opening remarks from Baylor President and CEO Dr. Paul Klotman; an overview of resources that are available to the Baylor community by Dr. Toi Harris, professor and associate provost for diversity, inclusion and equity; and a presentation on the "8 Rs of Racism" by Dr. Rayne Rouce, assistant professor and associate director of community engagement in the Office of Institutional Diversity, Inclusion and Equity. Following these presentations, attendees will participate in small-group discussions, then reconvene to present feedback, moderated by Dr. Alicia Monroe, provost and senior vice president for academic and faculty affairs. Please register in advance so that you can be assigned to a small group for discussion. CME available.


Awards and Recognitions

Li earns neuroscience honor

Dr. Nuo LiDr. Nuo Li, assistant professor of neuroscience and a McNair Scholar, has been awarded the 2020 McKnight Scholar Award from the McKnight Endowment Fund for Neuroscience. This highly competitive award recognizes scientists who are in the early stages of their research careers and who are working on research that has immediate and significant impact on clinically relevant issues. His work, titled "Cerebellar Computations during Motor Planning," will receive three years of funding, at $75,000 per year.

Rao appointed new neurosurgery chair

Dr. Ganesh RaoDr. Ganesh Rao has been appointed chair of the Department of Neurosurgery and will hold the Marc J. Shapiro Endowed Chair in Neurosurgery. An adjunct professor and program director for the neurosurgery residency program at Baylor, he currently is a professor of neurosurgery at MD Anderson Cancer Center. His clinical practice is largely focused on the management of primary brain tumors.

Vallejo named associate dean

Dr. Jesus VallejoDr. Jesus Vallejo, professor of pediatrics – infectious diseases, has been named associate dean for admissions, diversity, equity and multicultural affairs in the School of Medicine. A Baylor alumnus, he serves as co-director of the Clinical Scientist Training Program in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and previously was the School of Medicine's assistant dean of admissions.

Young to lead Institutional Advancement

Stephanie YoungStephanie Young has been named senior vice president for institutional advancement. Prior to starting her own consulting firm, she was with MD Anderson Cancer Center for 16 years, rising to the position of associate vice president for development. Highly successful in fundraising with Forbes 400 individuals, Fortune 500 corporations and CEOs, and community and family foundations, she has extensive experience in building meaningful relationships and strategic partnerships.

Commit to life at a blood drive for the Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center, Tuesday, June 23, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Baylor Gym, 8th floor of Garage 6, at main Baylor. BCM BeWell is offering a virtual opportunity for participants and their loved ones to stay active! Simply choose any form of exercise from a list of options and complete the activity between June 24 – 30. Eligible employees who participate will receive 250 BCM BeWell points.
