Celebrating our graduates!  

Military Commissioning

Baylor held its 2022 commencement ceremony at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on Tuesday, May 24, its first in-person ceremony with family and friends since 2019. The School of Medicine graduated 170 students, while 86 graduates received diplomas from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and nine graduated from the Genetic Counseling Program in the School of Health Professions. Twenty-five students graduated from dual degree programs, and 14 graduates received diplomas from the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor. Read a recap and see videos here, and see a gallery of photos. Earlier in the day, three graduates, Capt. Summer Walton and Capt. Elizabeth LaFrance, both U.S. Army, and Lt. Kylie Wilson, U.S. Navy, pictured here, were commissioned into the military to continue their medical training and careers as doctors while serving their country.

Resources to cope with trauma

The Baylor community is struggling to understand and cope with the most recent mass shooting Tuesday in Uvalde, Texas. The College has compiled resources to help. This includes a guide to talking to children about the shooting from the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, which can be accessed here in both English and Spanish. In addition, Baylor is part of the Texas Child Mental Health Care Consortium, which provides services and resources to healthcare providers, schools and the community. Learn more here. Faculty, staff, students and trainees also can access the following mental health services if they need someone to talk to following this tragic event:

Faculty Affairs updates

Dr. Susan RaineDr. Susan Raine, professor of obstetrics and gynecology, has been named associate dean of faculty affairs of Baylor College of Medicine. Raine received her medical degree from Baylor in 2001 before completing her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology and joining Baylor faculty in 2005. For the past six years, Raine has worked in the Office of Faculty Development on faculty awards and promotions.
Dr. William CulpDr. William C. Culp, Jr., has been named associate dean of faculty affairs and faculty development of Baylor's new regional campus in Temple. Culp attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He joined Baylor Scott & White Health's anesthesiology department in 2005.

Be sure to check out the newest display in the A hallway in the Cullen Building featuring Image of the Month selections from Baylor’s science blog, From the Labs. All images were created and taken by Baylor researchers as they work to make new discoveries. We invite our research community to submit their research images and videos to From the Labs. The submissions will be considered for posting in From the Labs as the Image/Video of the Month, in future hallway displays at main Baylor, Baylor webpages and other projects.

Middle school teaching opportunities

Are you or someone you know looking for a unique science teaching opportunity? The Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk is looking for two teachers for the 2022-2023 school year for their 6th Grade Neuroscience and 8th Grade Principles of Biosciences courses! BCM Biotech Academy at Rusk is a BCM-affiliated Houston ISD magnet middle school for students in grades 6 - 8 who are interested in the biomedical sciences. Ideal teacher candidates should possess a passion for teaching and a desire to mentor the next generation of medical scientists. Tour of vaccine center

BioE tour

Texas Children's Hospital hosted leaders from Biological E. Limited on May 10 for a tour of the Texas Children's Center for Vaccine Development, which is co-directed by Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi, dean and associate dean, respectively, of Baylor's National School of Tropical Medicine. Bottazzi and Hotez and their research team have developed the Corbevax COVID-19 vaccine, which is now being administered to millions of people in India. Dr. Bottazzi is pictured here giving a lab tour. 


Awards and Recognitions

Faculty Award winners

Faculty Awards Day was held Thursday, May 19, in person for the first time since 2019. The event honored nearly 200 faculty members for excellence across the College's mission areas. The Barbara and Corbin J. Robertson Award for Excellence in Education was presented to Dr. William Huang, Family and Community Medicine, and Dr. Gordon Schutze, Pediatrics and vice dean, School of Medicine, and Dr. John H. Coverdale, Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was presented with the Ben and Margaret Love Foundation Bobby Alford Award for Academic Clinical Professionalism. Davis honored for nurse education

Dr. Rachel DavisDr. Rachel Davis, associate professor of anesthesiology and health professions and director of the Nurse Anesthesia Program in the School of Health Professions, has received the 30th annual Didactic Instructor of the Year Award, which was established to recognize individuals who have made a significant contribution to the education of student nurse anesthetists in the classroom. The award will be presented Aug. 13 at the opening ceremonies of the American Association of Nurse Anesthesiology Annual Congress in Chicago.
