Showcase research in From the Labs

Research image

From the Labs, Baylor's basic science research blog, invites the Baylor research community to submit research images and videos. The submissions will be considered for posting in From the Labs as the Image/Video of the Month, in the mini gallery on display at main Baylor and on Baylor webpages and other projects. From the Labs spotlights the newest and most interesting research work at the College to the Baylor community and beyond. For more details, visit the Call for Submissions page. In this image immunofluorescence staining is shown of a human nose organoid cultures infected with SARS-CoV-2. Red shows basal stem cells, yellow tags SARS-CoV-2, green marks Goblet cells and blue shows nuclei. Organoids are a novel 3D cellular model that recapitulates many aspect of cell biology, both in health and disease.

Today: Biomedical Research Awareness Day

Biomedical Research Awareness Day is today, promoting public awareness about the roles of animal models in biomedical research. Stop by the E hallway by the cafeteria at main Baylor until 4 p.m. for games, prizes and information, and join a talk at noon by Zoom with Dr. Kathryn Jones, associate professor of pediatrics – tropical medicine.

Family Medicine Mental Health Series

The Department of Family and Community Medicine continues its Mental Health Awareness Series Monday, April 25, noon – 1 p.m., with a presentation on domestic violence, with an emphasis on intimate partner violence. Register to attend the webinar.

Autism webinar on food refusal

The SPARK for Autism team at Baylor and Texas Children's Hospital is hosting a free, SPARK-sponsored webinar in partnership with Houston clinical psychologist Dr. Rinita Roberts, Friday, April 29, 2022, from noon - 1:30 p.m. Roberts will provide an overview of assessment and treatment techniques for pediatric food refusal, as well as a description of the Harris Center's Feeding Disorders Program. Celebration of Life honoring Dr. C. Thomas Caskey

The Department of Molecular and Human Genetics will host a Celebration of Life honoring Dr. C. Thomas Caskey on Monday, May 2, at 3 p.m. at the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute, 1250 Moursund St. A reception will follow. RSVP to Genetics-RSVP@bcm.edu for in-person attendance. TCH-BCM joint book club

The medical humanities groups of Baylor and Texas Children's are hosting a joint book club featuring "This Boy We Made" by Taylor Harris, May 10 at 3 p.m., via Zoom (Meeting ID 987 4051 1824, Password 979189, Phone: 713-798-9666). Breast cancer education

Register today for "Updates on Advanced Breast Cancer: Local Management and other new Perspectives," an educational activity hosted by Baylor and MD Anderson Cancer Center on Friday, May 13 and Saturday, May 14. Dr. Bora Lim, associate professor of medicine – oncology in the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, will serve as co-course director. The event is open to physicians, healthcare professionals, trainees and patients and will take place virtually and in person at the Marriott Medical Center Hotel Houston, 6580 Fannin Street. Awards and Recognitions

Curry earns neurosurgery honor

Dr. Daniel CurryDr. Daniel Curry, associate professor of neurosurgery and pediatric neurosurgeon at Texas Children's Hospital, was named the Karolinska Institutet 2022 Herbert Olivecrona award winner. The Swedish institute gives out this annual award, which is considered by some to be the Nobel Prize of neurosurgery.

Hotez, Bottazzi honored for vaccine development

Dr. Peter HotezDr. Maria Elena Bottazzi The team of scientists from Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development at Baylor led by Dr. Peter Hotez and Dr. Maria Elena Bottazzi received the Best Academic Research Team Award at the Vaccine Industry Excellence Awards Ceremony & Dinner, hosted by the World Vaccine Congress Washington earlier this week. Their award was in recognition to their dedication and effort in the development of the COVID-19 vaccine and that currently is being administered in India.

Sandulache to chair NCI group

Dr. Vlad SandulacheDr. Vlad Sandulache, associate professor and quality improvement officer in the Bobby R. Alford Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, was appointed chair of the new NRG Oncology Veterans Affairs/Military Treatment Facility (VA-MTF) Subcommittee. NRG Oncology is a National Cancer Institute National Clinical Trials Network group focused on improving outcomes for adults with cancer; the subcommittee will provide a forum for advocating with these communities and engaging them in NRG research. Sandulache is a staff physician at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Women of Excellence Award winners

During Women's History Month in March, 48 women at Baylor were honored with Women of Excellence Awards from the Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. They were recognized for their leadership and contributions to addressing issues that affect women at Baylor and beyond. Congratulations to all the Women of Excellence.
