Long-COVID funding

COVID funding

Baylor hosted U.S. Rep. Sylvia Garcia (TX-29) on campus Wednesday for a check presentation from the Congressional Community Project Funding program that will support and expand long-COVID care clinics at Baylor and Harris Health. The $1.1 million funding is part of the Bipartisan Omnibus Appropriations Bill. Long-haul COVID symptoms can affect anyone who has had COVID regardless of severity. Treatment and research into continued care and needs of those with lingering symptoms is now a focus of healthcare providers. 2022 Faculty Senate Elections

Baylor's Faculty Senate is the primary venue for faculty participation in shared governance and planning at the College. Education, faculty affairs and benefits, strategic planning, communications and public affairs, and administrative operations are the subjects of the senate's standing committees. The 2022 Faculty Senate Elections are approaching. Faculty must self-nominate to run for a senate seat. Please refer to theFaculty Senate Elections page for process and eligibility. 

Community outreach event

The Baylor community participated in outreach activities for Kids' Meals, Inc., an organization that provides meals for children in need in the Houston area. See our volunteers in action in this video.

Update to InTouch coming soon

InTouch, Baylor's new intranet, will receive an upgrade in the coming week. Look out for an update for the mobile version of InTouch that will improve navigation and menus and offer a better experience for users on the Safari browser. In addition, a variety of updates to the backend of InTouch will lead to a better browsing experience as we use new tools to make InTouch even better. While waiting for these upgrades, view a refresher on what InTouch has to offer.

'Portrait of a Thief' book signing

Grace D. Li, daughter of Baylor faculty member Dr. Shixia Huang and a former intern in the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center, will sign copies of her book, "Portrait of a Thief," Monday, April 18, room 327A at main Baylor. The book centers on college friends turned art thieves who aim to steal back Chinese artifacts from Western museums, while also examining themes of identity and other complex issues.

Sound of Well-Being continues

The "Sound of Well-Being" continues April 20 and April 27, noon – 1 p.m., with the Texas Medical Center Orchestra. Join this musical journey to well-being in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor.

Hotez to deliver BCM lecture on COVID vaccines

Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor, will speak on "COVID-19 Vaccines: Science vs. Antiscience" at the eighth annual Bobby R. Alford, M.D. Grand Rounds Distinguished Lecture, Wednesday, April 27, 2 – 3 p.m., in Cullen Auditorium at main Baylor, with a reception following in Alkek Lobby by the DeBakey Museum and Library. The lecture is endowed by Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations. It also will be offered by Zoom (passcode: MCB@BCM).

Walk to Cure Arthritis

Join the Baylor team for the Walk to Cure Arthritis, May 14 at Buffalo Bayou Trail starting at 9 a.m. Baylor's Orthopedics and Sports Medicine team is a sponsor of this year's event. You can also donate to the team, even if you can't join the walk.

Mattox surgical suite dedicated

Dr. Mattox surgical suite dedication

The career of one of Houston's most renowned trauma surgeons and medical educators was honored at an April 7 dedication ceremony of the Kenneth L Mattox, M.D., Surgical Suite at Ben Taub Hospital. Dr. Mattox, Distinguished Service Professor at Baylor, served as chief of staff at Ben Taub Hospital, part of Harris Health, for 31 years before stepping down in 2020. He has been part of the Baylor family for more than 60 years as a student, trainee and faculty leader. Read more in BCM Family.

Dr. Wayne Goodman Dr. Jason Mills Dr. Xander WehrensDr. Wayne Goodman, chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences; Dr. Jason Mills, professor of medicine and chief of research for gastroenterology and hepatology; and Dr. Xander Wehrens, director of the Cardiovascular Research Institute and professor of molecular physiology and biophysics, all were inducted in the Association of American Physicians. The AAP is an honorary medical society founded in 1885 by Sir William Osler and six other distinguished physicians of his era for "the advancement of scientific and practical medicine." Election is an honor extended to physicians with outstanding credentials in basic or translational biomedical research and is limited to 70 people per year. The AAP includes about 1,200 active members and 700 emeritus and honorary members.

Lupo joins National Cancer Institute editorial board

Dr. Philip LupoDr. Philip Lupo, professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology and director of the Epidemiology and Population Sciences Program at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Center, recently was invited to join the Journal of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Spectrum editorial board.

Sanchez Ventura earns minority fellow award

Dr. Luisanna Sanchez VenturaDr. Luisanna Sanchez Ventura, fellow in pediatric hematology and oncology, has been selected by the American Society of Hematology to receive the 2022 ASH Minority Hematology Fellow Award. This award encourages early-career researchers from historically underrepresented minority groups to pursue a career in academic hematology. Each awardee receives $100,000 for clinical or laboratory-based hematology research projects, to develop additional research skills and generate preliminary data.

Shah honored by Mental Health America

Dr. Asim ShahDr. Asim Shah, professor and executive vice chair of the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Baylor, was honored with the Ima Hogg Award from Mental Health America of Greater Houston. The award, presented at an April 12 luncheon, recognizes an individual or organization that has championed mental health and provided leadership that affected change. Watch this video recognizing Dr. Shah, who serves on the Board of Directors of Mental Health America of Greater Houston.
