Fourth-year medical students celebrate Match Day

A recently-match student celebrating Match Day 2022

Fourth-year medical students found out where they will continue their medical training at Match Day last Friday. More than 160 students matched with a residency program, with 43% of them in the primary care fields of family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, internal medicine/pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology or emergency medicine. Forty students will continue their training in residencies at Baylor, and 63 matched with residency programs in Texas. Watch a video recap of the day here and check out more photos here.

OUTList Directory

The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion worked to create the OUTList, a directory and database on InTouch for BCM LGBTQ+ students, staff, faculty, residents and postdocs. This directory will help promote engagement, networking and awareness. We invite Baylor staff, faculty and trainees who identify as LGBTQ+ to join this directory.

Bioethics Grand Rounds

Join Virtual Bioethics Grand Rounds on March 30 at noon for "Use of Potentially Manipulative Communication Practices in Surrogate Decision Making – COVID," presented by speakers from Baylor, Houston Methodist Hospital and Weill Cornell Medical Center. Jointly sponsored by Baylor's Center for Medical Ethics and Health Policy, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center, Houston Methodist and Texas Children's Hospital. Register by Zoom.

Cardiovascular Research Institute Events

Spring Seminar Series: The Cardiovascular Research Institute will host Dr. Hesham Sadek, the J. Fred Schoellkopf, Jr. Chair in Cardiology from UT Southwestern, on March 30 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Spring Seminar Series. His seminar is titled "Transcriptional Regulation of Cardiomyocyte Cell Cycle: from Mechanism to Therapeutics." Register or email CVRI@bcm.edu for a calendar invite.

Research Symposium: The 9th Annual Cardiovascular Research Institute Symposium will take place April 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nine renowned scientists will share their research. This year's keynote speaker is Dr. Gregg Semenza, recipient of the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Register here.

Title IX Q&A: Stalking

The Title IX Office introduces monthly Q&A sessions to provide information and answer questions related to Title IX and its procedures at BCM. Join by Teams on March 31, noon – 12:45 p.m., for a discussion on stalking.

Wellness Events

Register for National Walking Day: Join BCM BeWell and BCM LIFE to celebrate National Walking Day and Earth Day in April. After registering, you will receive a virtual packet April 4 with resources, including walking routes and clubs in the Houston area, Zoom presentations and walking group opportunities. Also, register to join Meghan McKay, senior athletic trainer from orthopedic surgery, as she discusses how to prevent common walking/running injuries. Topics that will also be addressed include proper footwear and local walking events. Questions? Email wellness@bcm.edu.

Sound of Well-Being: In April, BCM BeWell and BCM LIFE will collaborate with the Center of Professionalism and the Texas Medical Center Orchestra to bring a series of musically inspired presentations. Baylor ranks 1st in Texas for global health

Baylor College of Medicine is ranked No. 26 out 60 universities and the first in Texas for global health by the Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM). The rankings are listed in UAEM's 2020 U.S. University Report Card, which analyzes the top research institutions and their performance in biomedical research and addressing global public health needs.

Armaghany selected for ASCO task force

Dr. Tannaz  ArmaghanyDr. Tannaz Armaghany, assistant professor of medicine – hematology and oncology at the Dan L Duncan Comprehensive Cancer Center, was selected to be on the 2022 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Item Writing and Peer Review Task Force. She will write questions for the ASCO self-evaluation program yearly book and the ASCO question bank and also will serve as item peer reviewer.

Arya publishes guidebook for publishing and presentations

Dr.  Monisha AryaDr. Monisha Arya, assistant professor of medicine – infectious diseases, published a guidebook to help trainees succeed in academic publishing and poster presentations. The step-by-step book contains 150 tips based on the "wins" her own mentees had over the years.

Liu receives genetic and genomic medicine innovation award

Dr.  Pengfei LiuDr. Pengfei Liu, assistant professor of molecular and human genetics, received the 2022 Dr. Michael S. Watson Genetic and Genomic Medicine Innovation Award from the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics Foundation for Genetic and Genomic Medicine. This award honors an individual whose work has had a significant impact on genetic and genomic medicine through the development or implementation of innovative concepts, methods or ideas. The Foundation announced the award during the 2022 ACMG Annual Clinical Genetics Meeting on March 23.

Peng appointed ACGME representative

Dr.  Frederick PengDr. Frederick Peng, chief resident in quality and patient safety, has been appointed as a resident/fellow representative on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education CLER Evaluation Committee. His expertise in health care quality and patient safety will help guide national CLER recommendations in these focus areas.

Graduate student earns women in research award

Bailey Martin-Giacalone, graduate student in the lab of Dr. Philip Lupo, was recently awarded the 2022 Women in Cancer Research Scholar Award. The awards are given annually to American Association for Cancer Research members who are scientists-in-training and presenters of meritorious scientific papers at the AACR Annual Meeting.

Medical student receives public health award

Fourth-year medical student Amelia Aynaz Khoei received the 2022 United States Public Health Service Excellence in Public Health Award. This award was established to recognize medical students' contribution to public health. She received the award due to her commitment to public health and to the goals and priorities of Healthy People 2030 and the Surgeon General's Priorities. Her leadership and hard work demonstrate her passion and dedication to public health within the medical profession.

COVID-19 case numbers are down in the Houston area, and Dr. James McDeavitt, executive vice president and dean of clinical affairs, tells KPRC 2 that summer travel will be relatively safe.
