Microsoft Teams & Enterprise training: The Information Technology Business Enablement Team offers weekly coaching sessions on Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Enterprise Cloud Storage. These sessions are offered Tuesdays at 9 a.m. and Thursdays at 1 p.m. Department and individual sessions are also available by appointment. Sign up online

Faculty needed to lead GME initiative

The Office of Graduate Medical Education seeks a dynamic faculty member with strong teaching skills and educational expertise to lead the "Residents as Teachers" initiative. In this role, the faculty member would be engaged with both undergraduate and graduate medical education leaders to innovate the current curriculum and lead new GME initiatives related to developing trainees as medical educators. Apply for HISD magnet schools

Houston ISD is home to amazing magnet school programs, including BCM associated high-performing and award-winning biomedical middle school Baylor College of Medicine Academy at James D. Ryan, biotechnology school Baylor College of Medicine Biotech Academy at Rusk, and DeBakey High School for Health Professions. The deadline for families in the HISD school district to submit for Phase 2 application to these schools is Thursday, March 10. Families outside of the school district may also submit anytime provided space continues to be available. Apply online.

STAT Madness voting open!

STAT Madness 2022 is underway, and research from Drs. Nathan P. Achilly, Wei Wang and Huda Zoghbi is in the running! Their work focuses on early training for RETT showing that mice with a mutation producing many of the same symptoms of the disorder had slower symptom onset when trained early, before the onset of symptoms in the first place. STAT Madness is a bracket-style tournament to find the best innovation in science and medicine. To vote, you must register for a free account with STAT. You can follow the action on social media using the hashtag #STATMadness.

Deadline extended: Patient safety conference abstracts

The abstract deadline has been extended to Sunday, March 6, for the 8th annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Conference, "Emerging Trends in Quality and Safety: New Strategies, Priorities and Directions." Faculty, health professionals, trainees and students may submit abstracts related to quality improvement and patient safety using this online form. The conference will be held April 28, 5:30 – 7 p.m., and offers the opportunity to complete numerous CME credits for healthcare providers. Register for the conference.

Compassionate Conversation on healthcare and African heritage

The Office of Institutional Diversity, Equity & Inclusion hosts a Compassionate Conversation, co-sponsored by the Yates Museum, March 8, 5 – 6:30 p.m., on "Archaeology and Health Care History within African Heritage Populations on Plantations and Cities in the United States during the 1800 and early 1900s," presented by Dr. Kenneth L. Brown, professor of anthropology, University of Houston. Brown will discuss historical archaeological findings in Houston and healthcare practices in the early 1900s in Freedman's Town. CVRI symposium on children's cardiology

The Cardiovascular Research Institute continues its virtual Spring Seminar Series at noon on March 9 with "Outcome Modeling in Children with Aortas Large and Small," by Dr. Shaine Morris, associate professor of pediatrics – cardiology and medical director of cardiovascular genetics at Baylor and Texas Children's. Annual medical student research symposium

The 22nd Henry JN Taub & James K Alexander Medical Student Research Symposium 2022 is Thursday, March 10. Narrated posters can be viewed on VoiceThread. Select posters will be showcased March 7 – 10 in Rayzor Lounge at main Baylor; everyone may vote for their favorite poster. On symposium day, join poster discussions on Zoom from 9 - 11 a.m. A keynote talk in conjunction with Department of Medicine Grand Rounds will be delivered from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. in Cullen Auditorium and also by Zoom by Dr. Lorraine Potocki, professor of molecular and human genetics, on "The Essential Elements of Discovery." Apply for training on genetics research program

The All of Us Evenings with Genetics Research Program will host the 2022 Underrepresented Biomedical Researcher Faculty Summit on May 19-21. The summit will provide underrepresented biomedical researchers who are early career faculty and senior postdoctoral fellows with training in data science and how to use the All of Us research dataset to establish or complement their research programs. Awards and Recognitions

Monroe honored as influential woman

Dr. Alicia MonroeDr. Alicia Monroe, provost and senior vice president of academic and faculty affairs, was honored as one of Houston's 50 Most Influential Women of 2020-21 by Houston Woman Magazine. She was recognized for her expertise in her field and for being a thought-leader and influencer. Monroe and the other recipients were honored at a dinner Feb. 24 at the Junior League of Houston.

Trainees participate in AACR congressional event

Dr. Kimiko KriegerBailey Martin-GiacaloneTwo Baylor trainees participated in the American Association for Cancer Research's seventh annual AACR Early-career Hill Day. Dr. Kimiko Krieger, a postdoctoral associate, and Bailey Martin-Giacalone, a Ph.D. candidate, were among 36 students, trainees and early career cancer researchers, representing 20 states and Washington, D.C., who met with more than 70 members of Congress and their staff. The event was held virtually on March 3.
