Professional Statement
As Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic and Faculty Affairs at Baylor College of Medicine my goal is to support all members of the Baylor community in fulfilling our mission of creating and applying science and discoveries to advance education. My academic interests include curricula development and faculty development with specific focus on physician-patient communication, cross-cultural communication, and mentoring students and faculty.
Prior to joining Baylor in February of 2014, I was at the University of South Florida where I held several leadership positions and was instrumental in coordinating education programs. At USF, I oversaw undergraduate medical education programs, the physical therapy program and the master’s program in graduate studies. Working with the faculty and trainees of USF, we reengineered medical education there to enhance student readiness for postgraduate training and medical practice.
In partnership with the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, Penn., I developed the SELECT (Scholarly Excellence, Leadership Experiences, Collaborative Training) MD Program. As the principal investigator of a new Professional Project jointly sponsored by the Institute on Medicine as a Profession and the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, I lead support of the development of new initiatives and training around patient-centered care.
I previously served in leadership roles at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. At Brown, I was the associate dean for diversity on the Division of Biology and Medicine, a member of the Executive Leadership Council and an associate dean of medicine for minority affairs.
