Bracey to serve on HHS advisory committee

Dr. Arthur BraceyDr. Arthur Bracey, professor of pathology, was selected to serve on the Department of Health and Human Sciences Advisory Committee on Blood and Tissue Safety and Availability (ACBTSA), which has the goal of creating a report to Congress on the national blood supply. The subcommittee will address measures that promote safety and innovation to improve the safety and reliability of blood and maintain an adequate national blood supply for the American people.

Poplack honored for lifetime achievement

Dr. David PoplackDr. David Poplack, professor of pediatrics - hematology and oncology and director of Global Hematology-Oncology Pediatric Excellence (HOPE) at Texas Children's Cancer and Hematology Centers, was honored with the first-ever Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation Childhood Cancer Lifetime Achievement Award at the Foundation's Lemonade Ball.

Chao Physician-Scientist awardees

The Chao Physician-Scientist Award provides funding for young Baylor investigators who are beginning their independent research careers and are made possible through the support of the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation of Houston. This year's awardees and their projects are:

  • Dr. Ronit Marom, “Activation of ERK/MAPK signaling contributes to the bone fragility in osteogenesis imperfecta type V”
  • Dr. Laurie Robak, "Lysosomal storage disorder genes as risk factors for Parkinson's disease"
  • Dr. Venee Tubman, "Characterization of B Lymphocyte Deficiency in Pediatric Sickle Cell Disease"

Events

Feb. 19 events: Ob/Gyn Grand Rounds, MoneyTalk, Alford Lecture

  • Obstetrics & Gynecology Grand Rounds, 8 – 9 a.m. at Texas Children's Hospital Auditorium in the Abercrombie Building, will focus on women's rights and other important issues in a talk titled "Women: The Journey is Far from Over" by Dr. Jim Dornan, professor of fetal medicine at Queen's University of Belfast and of health and life sciences at the University of Ulster. CME credit available.
  • Human Resources' seminar series MoneyTalk will focus on estate planning, presented by the Foundation for Financial Education, noon in Cullen Auditorium. Eligible employees can earn 50 BCM BeWell Vitality points. Questions? Email ask-retirement@bcm.edu.
  • The sixth annual Bobby R. Alford, M.D., Grand Rounds Distinguished Lecture, 4 p.m. in room M112 at main Baylor, will feature Dr. C. Ronald Kahn speaking on a novel model of tissue communication. Kahn is chief academic officer and head of integrative physiology and metabolism at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Massachusetts. Endowed by the Diana Helis Henry and Adrienne Helis Malvin Medical Research Foundations.

Feb. 20: Life lessons from Dr. Doolittle

The Center for Professionalism presents two talks by Dr. Benjamin Doolittle of the Yale School of Medicine and Yale Divinity School titled "Thriving: Wisdom and Life Lessons from Happy Physicians," Feb. 20, 12:15 p.m. in room M112 and 5 p.m. in room 301A, main Baylor.

Feb. 29: Forensic training to assist asylum seekers

Physicians for Human Rights at Baylor hosts its second annual training event on conducting forensic evaluations for asylum seekers, Feb. 29 at main Baylor. Applicants who have a forensic medical or psychological evaluation are three times as likely to win their asylum cases compared to those without documentation. Training is open to physicians, mental health providers, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and medical students, and will include sessions on human rights and asylum law, physical and psychological forensic evaluations, and medical-legal affidavit writing. All who receive training will be eligible to volunteer in the Baylor College of Medicine Human Rights and Asylum Clinic, which has been conducting these evaluations since summer 2019. College News

Title IX reporting requirements

A new state law requires any employee of a college or university in Texas to report to the Title IX Coordinator any information regarding an alleged incident of sexual harassment, sexual assault, dating violence, or stalking, committed by or against a person enrolled at or employed by the institution. Failure to report could result in termination and criminal penalties. See the Title IX website for more information and resources on this law as well as how to report an incident.

Space health faculty/scientist exchange

The Translational Research Institute for Space Health at Baylor is seeking applications for the Faculty Exchange Program: Space Health Swap. The program stimulates new collaborations, ideas and approaches for biomedical research to tackle NASA's health and human performance challenges. It provides an opportunity for clinicians and scientists to spend time learning at a NASA center during summer 2020. Applications are due March 6, 2020. Learn more information and apply online.

The School of Medicine Curriculum Committee is seeking nominations for a vice-chair and an at-large position. Interested faculty from all disciplines are encouraged to apply for this important leadership role by Friday, March 6.
